Sacramento loves their craft beer.

The Indomitable City was named among the nation’s top 10 cities that love craft beer the most, according to a list released this week by Marketwatch.

Sacramento ranks fifth on the list, which says 33 percent of all beer sold in the city is craft beer. Additionally, the region features approximately 40 local breweries according to The Sacramento Bee.

Sacramento Republic FC fans are certainly reflective of a top craft beer city. Related surveys conducted by Sacramento Republic FC among fans indicate that their first choice is local craft beer, followed by craft beer in general at matches.

“We’ve seen a renaissance of culture, food, beer, music and everything,” said Rubicon Brewing Co. owner Glynn Phillips. “Sacramento is becoming more of a destination. It’s been fascinating to see the change.”

Republic FC studies also indicate that in addition to loving craft beer, Republic FC fans are more likely to attend beer and music festivals than even other sporting events.

“Craft beer drinkers love social experiences,” said Republic FC Marketing and Communications Vice President Erika Bjork. “We are across the street from New Helvetia Brewing, and I jokingly say I use it for a lot of our market research. When you visit local breweries you see people with their dogs or their kids. We’ve found that the fans who come to our matches are very similar in their lifestyle choices.”

Sacramento’s craft beer scene has flourished in recent years. The number of local breweries has more than tripled since 2010, not to mention the addition of numerous beer bars throughout region.

At the 2015 California State Fair Commercial Craft Beer Competition, regional breweries dominated in a variety of categories. Local breweries took home top honors in the Porter, Light Lager, Session and American Ale categories. In all, nearly a dozen local breweries took home awards.

Sacramento Republic FC has highlighted the city’s beer scene in a variety of ways, including the club’s Farm-to-Pitch series, “Blood. Sweat. Beers.” shirts and rotating beer selection at Bonney Field. Of the 20 beers available at Bonney Field, there are a dozen craft beers with at least three local breweries, such as Heretic Brewing Co. and Rubicon Brewing Co. at every match.

“It’s very similar to the European model, where the pub is not just a bar. It’s a gathering place for the neighborhood. These gathering places are critical to the growth of our sport and we’ve tried to create a bit of this experience at the match,” said Bjork.

In addition to Republic FC matches, there’s there is not shortage of craft beer related events and places in Sacramento.

Upcoming beer related events in Sacramento include the California Craft Beer Summit next month, a two-day event that will feature more than 150 California breweries that will be part of the Farm-to-Fork Festival September 10-27. TBD Fest, a three-day music festival running September 18-20, will also feature craft beer tents and local craft beer.

Republic FC fans are also encouraged to mark their calendars for early March 2016, which will be Sacramento Beer Week, with the Capitol Beer Fest on March 6, 2016. Last year, Republic FC was the first-ever presenting sponsor for Sacramento Beer Week, which featured more than 600 craft beer and food events over 11 days in Sacramento.
