Republic FC will be participating in several community events celebrating the holiday

Sacramento Republic FC are participating in the Calaveras & Corn Festival this Saturday and the first annual Día de los Muertos Oak Park, which cumulates with a community celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Día de los Muertos is a holiday that remembers and honors family and friends that have passed away. The tradition’s roots go back thousands of years to pre-Columbian times. Día de los Muertos fuses the beliefs of indigenous groups in Mexico with Spanish traditions and Roman Catholic beliefs.

To kickoff the festivities, Republic FC will be at Saturday’s Calaveras & Corn Festival, a free family carnival celebrating both Día de los Muertos and Halloween. The festival will have carnival games, hay rides, face painting, an art station, a pumpkin patch, a haunted house and a kids’ costume contest.

The Calaveras & Corn Festival will also include a scavenger hunt that will begin on the south steps of the Capitol. Each team is allowed two people and the registration cost is $40 in advance or $60 the day of. Each participant will receive a free taco and a t-shirt. Following the carnival, from 3-6:30 p.m., there will be a special mezcal cantina experience where event attendees can learn about the history of this traditional Mexican beverage.

As part of Día de los Muertos Oak Park, several area businesses, including Republic FC’s Team Store and Headquarters, are showcasing traditional Día de los Muertos alters. A major part of Día de los Muertos, alters are traditionally constructed either in homes or at gravesites. Each altar differs from the next, with families and friends constructing altars with items their deceased loved ones enjoyed.

All nine of the business altars are available to view to the public. You can find a map for a self-guided tour here. Fans may visit Republic FC Headquarters and Team Store to view the alter during business hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
