For the third year in a row, Sacramento Republic FC have teamed up with a local artist to bring another unique artist scarf to Season Ticket Holders. Sacramento visual artist Maren Conrad has created an exclusive design for the 2018 Republic FC Season Ticket Holder artist scarf, featuring her rendition of the bear and star prominent on the club’s crest.

“I’m really excited about this piece because I drew from Mexican folk art and art history to help give the inspiration for this piece,” said Conrad. “A lot of my work incorporates celebrating California art history, California history and some different elements of the different rich cultures that make Sacramento and California such an amazing place to live.”

Working out of her private studio in Sacramento, Conrad was one of many local artists to create a piece for the Wide Open Walls festival earlier this year. The festival celebrates the beauty of street art, and artists helped transform walls and neighborhoods throughout the downtown area with their own unique pieces that reflect the diversity of not only the city but the state as well.

Conrad, along with a team of painters, took to transforming the back wall of the MARRS building located on 20th St between J and K streets for the Wide Walls Open festival. She has also designed murals and other pieces for many Sacramento locations, including City Hall as well as local businesses like Poke Noke.

For her Republic FC artist scarf concept, Conrad drew on the styles and elements of work from Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, as well as elements found in Mexican pottery. This includes elements such as stippling and the incorporation of the color black, all elements that can be found throughout her paint and metal-leaf piece which is protected between multiple layers of resin.

“Mexican culture is such an important part of soccer and California history,” said Conrad. “I wanted to incorporate some aspects that I felt inspiration from, including Mexican artists from the past. I looked a lot at Diego Rivera’s work and personal favorite Frida Kahlo and some different sculptures.”

Conrad also has the distinct honor of being the first female artist to create a design for Republic FC’s artist scarf series, something that is not lost on her. Conrad’s piece reflects this honor with some unique features that can be seen in the bear itself.

“I’m deeply honored to be the first female artist who gets to participate in an art scarf. I elongated the claws to reflect a longer fingernail. I made the eyes on the bear a little more like a cat eye to pull on some different feminine features. But she is absolutely strong and powerful at the same time, which I though was really important.”

To tie in the entire design, Conrad included a vivid green block in the lower third of the design to represent the pitch. This element will be included in the ends of the artist scarf in order to have texture that reflects the feel of grass in the fringe that adorns the scarf.

The 2018 Artist Scarf will be available for Season Ticket Holders—including Tower Bridge Battalion members—who renewed their seats prior to the renewal deadline and will be available for pick-up at the annual Season Ticket Party in March 2018.
