Sacramento Republic FC to Host Fresno Fuego on May 28 in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Cosumnes River College

Sacramento Republic FC will take on the Fresno Fuego on May 28 in a third-round matchup in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Cosumnes River College Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. Tickets are available at $10 each at

The U.S. Open Cup is an 80-team, single elimination soccer tournament that includes all 38 professional soccer teams in the United States as well as 42 amateur teams.

The second round of the U.S. Open Cup took place on Wednesday, May 14 and consisted of 24 matches between the eight first-round winners, 26 amateur teams and all 14 USL PRO teams. Republic FC defeated the Ventura County Fusion 2-1 in the second round of tournament to advance to the tournament’s third round that will include all 8 US based North American Soccer League (NASL) teams and the 24 second round winners.

“The Open Cup means a lot because it is an opportunity to gain recognition on a nationwide scale,” said Republic FC Technical Director Graham Smith. “It would be indicative of our ability to compete at a higher level both on and off the field.”

Republic FC head coach Predrag “Preki” Radosavljević will be suspended for the match, serving the second of a two match U.S. Open Cup suspension stemming from an incident in 2009 while he was head coach of Chivas USA. Assistant Coach Rod Underwood will lead the squad from the sideline. The winner of the match will play Republic FC’s MLS affiliate, the San Jose Earthquakes on June 11 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
