Sacramento Soccer Day success marks the beginning of a new era in Sacramento soccer.
Fans arrived for Sac Soccer Day presented by U.C. Davis Children’s Hospital at Raley Field on Thursday, July 18 eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the Sacramento Professional Soccer team name, colors, crest and the story behind its creation.
Midway through the packed event, 14,014 attendees watched as Coach Preki and President/Founder Warren Smith led the Tower Bridge Battalion fan group onto the field to unveil branding for Sacramento’s newest professional sports team.
“There’s one piece I wanted to show you now,” Smith said. “It’s the motto ‘Urbs Indomita.’ It means ‘Indomitable City’ because no matter what fire, flood or challenge faced the citizens of Sacramento, they chose to rise above, literally moving this river behind us to create a city and a place for all others to admire and inspire to be.”
Sacramento Republic FC was inspired by thousands of entries collected by Sacramento Professional Soccer, LLC during the Supercuts “Name the Team” Contest. Regional soccer fans and members of the Sacramento community submitted team name and color palette suggestions and Sacramento Republic FC was by far the most popular entry.
Smith said that the organization known as Sacramento Professional Soccer, “spent significant time conducting research, hosting focus groups and talking to many community members and fans to learn just what soccer means to Sacramento and the Republic name captures this spirit entirely. It represents a team effort that fans in this region and everywhere can get behind.”
The Supercuts “Superfan,” Jake Escobedo, won the “Name the team” contest and naturally took part in the unveiling as a Tower Bridge Battalion member as well.
The crowd got a feel for what’s to come when the USL PRO season kicks off in March 2014. Both games played during Sac Soccer Day brought energy to the crowd unlike any other sporting event in Sacramento.
Ruben Mora, Sr., who has been a fixture in Sacramento soccer for decades, and currently serves as VP Central California Soccer League, was presented with the first-ever Otto Massara Spirit Award. The award is named after Massara who was an advocate for soccer in Sacramento and inspired and supported many players and teams.
Launching a USL PRO team is one of the most exciting and important events for soccer in Sacramento. The Sacramento region has a rich history with Soccer and the Sacramento Republic organization will help take Sacramento soccer into the future and possibly into the MLS.
“I just want to ask you one question, Sacramento,” said Coach Predrag “Preki” Radosavlijevic said. “Do you want to go to MLS? The only way we’re going to MLS is if we work together. And I promise you that we will put the best team on the field that you will be proud of. But we can’t succeed without you. We need you to come and support the team. If you come and we put the numbers in the seats, I promise you we’re going there.”
Sacramento Republic FC will host a series of exhibition matches throughout the remainder of 2013 and play its inaugural season in 2014.
