The Sacramento Republic FC fell to the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Wednesday night (March 5) on the campus of CSU Stanislaus. Republic FC’s starting eleven held the MLS club’s first team scoreless well into second half of play.

The Earthquakes received a strong push from their second team scoring two goals in the final five minutes of the match.

The first goal came in the eighty-sixth minute off a cross by forward Walter Martinez that was passed by Alan Gordon and ultimately fired in by midfielder JJ Koval.

The second goal came a minute into stoppage time as Sam Garza’s corner was put in by Billy Shuler.

Republic FC played a strong game and had many opportunities to score, their best coming in the eightieth minute off a Jack Avaysen cross which Tommy Stewart headed off the cross bar.

Immediately following Tommy Stewart’s missed header Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch was subbed out due to injury.  Busch was the only remaining starter in the game as the Earthquakes subbed out the rest of their starting players at the seventy-one minute mark.

“The feeling is really good,” Republic FC coach Predrag “Preki” Radosavljevic said following the game. “We accounted ourselves pretty good tonight. We played really hard against an MLS team.”

This sentiment was echoed by midfielder Rodrigo Lopez. “I am happy with the performance of the team,” said Lopez. “I am sure we all know its better to happen now then when the season starts.”

A crowd of just over 1,100 was on hand at Warrior Stadium to watch the match including a strong contingent of Sacramento Republic FC fans lead by its supporter club, Tower Bridge Battalion.

“The fans were a lot louder then their fans were,” said Republic FC Defender Mickey Daly said after the game. “We felt like we were the home team”

In addition to the strong play by both verterans and rookies, goalkeeper and Portland Timbers loan player Jake Gleeson played all 90-minutes ending the match with 4 saves including two on open shots inside the box.
