Republic FC (4-4-2, 14 pts) head to the Lone Star State after grinding out a 1-0 win on Wednesday night against Reno 1868 FC in the Second Round of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup. Sam Werner, one of Republic FC’s brightest offseason signings, continued to make a name for himself after tapping home the lone goal of the night in the 83rd minute off a Drew Skundrich assist.
The result helps take the sting off the loss to their rivals just four days prior, especially given that it marks the third consecutive year Sacramento have eliminated Reno from the historic tournament.
Beyond the morale boost, Republic FC will also benefit from the return of forward Cameron Iwasa. The club’s all-time leading goal scorer came on as second half substitute in the midweek win over Reno after being sidelined for several games with an ankle injury.
Expansion side Locomotive FC (3-2-4, 13 pts) host Republic FC after falling 3-0 to Forward Madison FC in their Open Cup matchup midweek. In league play, however, El Paso is currently on a four-game unbeaten streak after drawing 2-2 with fellow expansion side New Mexico United last weekend.
All square—this is the first-ever match between Republic FC and Locomotive FC.
