Republic FC will look to book their place in the Fourth Round of 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they host Fresno FC on Wednesday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park in Cal Expo.

What’s at stake?

Wednesday night’s match will see Republic FC face off against their regional rivals for a second time in three weeks, but beyond bragging rights, a win would advance Sacramento to the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup where they would face a Major League Soccer opponent.

What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC are looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss on the road in their first-ever encounter with El Paso Locomotive FC two weeks ago. Drew Skundrich equalized after the expansion side had open the score early, but two second-half goals from Locomotive FC’s leading goal scorer   saw the hosts extend their unbeaten run in USL play to six games.

Prior to their loss in Texas, Republic FC defeated archrivals Reno 1868 FC 1-0 on May 15 in the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup. After a scoreless 83 minutes heavily impacted by the torrential downpour at Papa Murphy’s Park, Sam Werner struck home Skundrich’s cross to help Sacramento advance n the historic tournament.

How about the other guys?

Fresno FC arrive in Sacramento after drawing 3-3 with Tacoma Defiance over the weekend. The Foxes are on a three-game unbeaten run with their most recent (and only) defeat the season being their 1-0 loss to Republic FC on May 8.

Fans might notice some familiar faces on the pitch, as Fresno FC currently counts on the services of two former Republic FC players: defender Mickey Daly and forward Christian Chaney. Daly was part of Sacramento’s championship-winning team in 2014, while Chaney, who is currently tied as Fresno’s lead scorer with three goals, featured for Republic FC during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The Central Valley club is also led by head coach Adam Smith who previously served as head assistant coach at Republic FC for three seasons.

Head to Head

Wednesday’s match will be the first time Republic FC and Fresno FC face off in the U.S. Open Cup.

In league play, Sacramento is currently 3W-1L-0D against the Foxes:

  • Overall: 3-1-0
  • Home: 1-0-0 (GF: 1, GA:0)
  • Away: 2-1-0 (GF: 2, GA: 2)
