It’s not every offseason that a professional sports team has the luxury of reuniting with a player of RoRo's pedigree. Last week, Republic FC announced the return of the midfielder who provided plenty of leadership during the club's inaugural season en route to a USL Championship trophy, Rodrigo Lopez. The fan favorite who spent the last few seasons pursuing his dream of playing in Mexico's top flight, has returned to the Indomitable Club and is fired up to provide the same energy and class that he did during his first stint.
Before he suits up in Old Glory Red for the first time since the 2015 season, let’s look back on three of RoRo’s most memorable goals…
1. All the way from behind the halfway line… are you kidding me?!?! As Lopez reached midfield with possession, he recognized a golden opportunity and did everything but disappoint. RoRo rifled a shot that sailed over the visiting Vancouver goalkeeper and into the upper corner of the net to gift the boys in Old Glory Red a 1-0 lead. Republic FC went on to win the match, 2-0, and Lopez deservedly-so earned the Week 5 Championship Goal of the Week honor.
2. The Miracle at Bonney. Hollywood couldn’t script a better story. Down 2-0 to bitter rivals LA Galaxy II in the second half, RoRo took it upon himself to save Sacramento, and he did it in the most dramatic and nail-biting fashion. After bagging a brace to level the score at two a piece, a confident RoRo stepped up to a dead ball free kick deep into injury time and delivered a strike that no Republic FC fan will ever forget. Lopez’s curling effort soared past the upper corner and into the back of the net, securing Republic FC a place in the 2014 USL Championship Final. And securing Lopez a place in Sacramento soccer history.
3. RoRo’s rocket from well-outside the box was a blistering shot destined for goal. As Lopez received the ball from his teammate, the midfielder took one delicate touch to set himself for a powerful long-range effort. Once he had the ball at his feet, he knew full-well what his next move would be, and he did it flawlessly. The Coras FC ‘keeper simply had no chance of getting a fingertip on the powerful and precise shot, which was RoRo’s first career goal with Mexican club Celaya FC. What a first impression!
