The boys in Old Glory Red – representing the Mexican National Team – fell just shy of a second half comeback against Charleston Battery – competing as Greece – in Friday’s Division B Third Place showdown.
Current Republic FC defender Juan Barahona was in control of El Tri and despite going 2-0 down before the break, the Salvadorian left back continued pushing forward and cut the deficit in half in the 84th minute by way of Hirving Lozano. The Napoli playmaker picked out Jonathan dos Santos sprinting into the box where the midfielder drove with possession to the end line before laying a perfectly weighted ball into space for ‘Chucky’ to rifle into the back of the net.
Mexico was unable to find a second score, but the admirable performance earned SRFC 150 points in the overall league standings – elevating the total tally to 375 points thus far. The club that finishes the five-week competition with the most cumulative points will be crowned the overall winner of the inaugural USL eCup FIFA20 Edition.
A fourth-place finish still solidifies the boys in Old Glory Red a spot in Division-A next week, likely as the 12-seed with the first match expected to be on Tuesday, June 2. The opening round Div-A match be streaming live on the club’s Twitch stream, twitch.tv/SacramentoRepublicFC/, with the opponent and kick off time to be announced as soon as possible.
