Pregame Quotes Prior to Tacoma Clash

By Republic FC Communications, 07/10/20, 1:30PM PDT

See what the boys in Old Glory Red have to say ahead of Monday’s home match against Defiance at 7 p.m. PT

After just one game into the 2020 USL Championship campaign, the Indomitable Club’s season was put on hold but on Monday night Republic FC returns to the pitch at Papa Murphy’s Park against Tacoma Defiance.

Kickoff for the contest is 7 p.m. PT and the first game back for both clubs since early March will be nationally televised on ESPN Deportes. Republic FC fans can also tune-in to a special Virtual Watch Party and connect with fellow Sacramento fans – in English and in Spanish – and can learn more information and RSVP to the event here

As excitement around the city continues to build for the boys in Old Glory Red’s return to action, the intensity and energy levels are equally as amped up on the SRFC training pitch. Players, coaches and staff are fully focused on the season ahead, and they couldn’t be more thrilled about returning to their passion.

Here’s what a few members of the Indomitable Club had to say heading into Monday’s very first match back in action…

Head Coach Mark Briggs

On how it feels to be back at training with the full squad…
“It gets better and better every day we’re out here, it’s just nice to be back to normal. When you’re in quarantine and you’re away, you miss the little things like the sound the ball makes when it’s struck cleanly and the smell of the grass. It’s just nice to be out here and have the camaraderie with the players.”

On the fans tuning into Monday’s match…
“There will be people watching on national TV so we have an opportunity to put a smile on people’s faces, we have an opportunity to give them something that they can be proud of.”

Cameron Iwasa

On the team staying focused during the pandemic…
“It’s a credit to Todd [Dunivant] and Mark [Briggs], the kind of team they’ve put together that everybody came in ready to go once we were able to start training again. A big credit to our front office and a big credit to the guys to take it upon themselves to be ready.”

On what Monday’s match means to supporters of Republic FC…
“If we can be 90-95 minutes of time and escape for them, and some excitement and entertainment, that’s what it’s all about.

On finally returning to regular season play…
“It’s exciting, it’s been so long. Despite the fact that it’s going to be an empty stadium, I think the energy is going to be awesome, we just can’t wait to get back to playing.”

Drew Skundrich

On how it feels focusing on the season after a four-month long hiatus…
“It really feels like we’re going through a preseason and we’re about to start a new, full season right now. Hopefully we can just get back out there and have that momentum that we created in the preseason.”

On how the team needs to approach Monday’s match…
“We have to be the aggressors from the kickoff in every game that we play. We need to be fully focused, giving 100% effort, super high intensity to get ourselves into the game and once we’re in the game and playing at our highest level, we’ll be able to perform well, score a bunch of goals, knock on wood hopefully!”

Tomas Hilliard-Arce

On how the team feels heading into the restart of the regular season…
“The mood is right, the attitude is right, so I feel like we have a great mesh of everything.”

On the supporters of the Indomitable Club…
“I know the energy that they bring and the impact they can make so unfortunately they won’t be here but I’m sure we’ll feel their presence on social media. I feel like although they’re not here with us, they’re with us in spirit.”

Villyan Bijev

On Republic FC supporters watching the match…
“I know they’ll be supporting us from home. Just to be able to be able to give them that joy and that pleasure of watching us and rooting us on, and to know that they’re watching and rooting, it’s amazing.”

On what it means to be returning to play…
“I know the reason I play this sport is because I love to compete. I love to go up against other teams and show them everything we have and have been working on. Now it’s time to go win some games.”
