SACRAMENTO, California (July 13, 2020)– Republic FC returned to league play for the first time in over four months as the boys in Old Glory Red earned a point in the standings following a 1-1 draw against Tacoma Defiance Monday night at Papa Murphy’s Park.
The game was the first live professional sporting event in California since the pandemic as the Indomitable Club continued its unbeaten run on the 2020 USL Championship campaign with a second consecutive draw on the young season.
Tacoma took an early lead within a minute of the match when Danny Reynolds assisted Alec Diaz to lift the visitors to a 1-0 advantage.
But the boys in Old Glory Red were quick to respond when the ref pointed to the penalty spot following a foul in the Defiance defensive box in the eighth minute. Forward Dariusz Formella stepped up and confidently slammed his shot to the right to level the match at 1-1.
Directly off a corner kick a quarter of an hour later, midfielder Rodrigo Lopez whipped in a right-footed ball that found the towering Tomas Hilliard-Arce who powered his header into the back of the net. The 23rd minute goal was the first of the defenders’ career with the Indomitable Club and the assist was Roro’s first assist since reuniting with Sacramento.
Republic FC doubled its lead in the 37th minute when Formella bagged a beautiful brace following some pristine passing to set up the strike.
Midfielder Drew Skundrich fired a long ball down the right flank that found a surging Jordan McCrary who picked out the Polish playmaker with a perfect ball into the box. Formella rifled a left-footed effort by the visiting goalkeeper with his first touch to lift his side to a 3-1 lead. The brace was Formella’s first double of his Republic FC career and fourth goal in his Sacramento career.
In the 57th minute, Tacoma’s Jesse Daly fired a ball from outside of the box that dipped into the top left corner to cut Republic FC’s lead to 3-2.
Credit to Tacoma as the Pacific Northwest club continued pushing forward and found an equalizer late to level the match at three-a-piece in the 81st minute by way of forward Ray Serrano from close range.
The result wasn’t what Mark Briggs’ men were hoping for, but the Indomitable Club is unbeaten in 10 all-time fixtures in Sacramento against Tacoma.
Next up for the boys in Old Glory Red is the first of four regular season matchups when Division A opponent and regional rival Reno 1868 FC makes the trip to the California Capital this Sunday, July 19 at 6:00 p.m. PT. with the rivalry clash slated to be nationally televised on ESPN 2.
