Republic FC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz’s week 8 performance against Reno 1868 FC has earned him a nomination for USL Save of the Month – August. Voters pushed Diaz to the top of the Week 8 rankings with 54% of the vote over four quality goalkeepers from around the league. Voting for August’s Save of the Month is now open, and will run through Monday, September 7 at 9 a.m. at USLChampionship.com.
On August 12th, Republic FC hit the road for its second matchup against regional rivals, Reno 1868 FC for a Group A showdown. Diaz helped the Indomitable Club leave with three points, by holding Reno scoreless with five saves – including a close-range save from Corey Hertzog and follow-up from Christiano Francois in a stellar double-stop.
Through six matches, Diaz has earned three clean sheets, only allowed three goals on 15 saves, and is near the top of the USL Championship Golden Glove race – sitting second with a .50 goals-against average. Republic FC finished August undefeated, and started September with a thrilling 2-1 win against Portland Timbers 2.
Republic FC return to action next Wednesday, September 9, when the Indomitable Club hosts Orange County SC at 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast locally on KQCA My58 and Estrella TV Sacramento, as well as streamed on ESPN+.
