Republic FC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz has been nominated for the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 12 after the Sacramento shot stopper made a diving save to his left and help his side earn a hard-fought victory at home against Orange County SC on September 9.
Voting ends on Friday, September 18 at 9:00 a.m. PT and fans can vote for Rafa’s stunning stop on USLChampionship.com.
The nomination is Diaz’s second this season after the SRFC GK won the Week 8 award after receiving 54% of votes from the fans following a double-stop to help preserve a 1-0 win on August 12 against Reno 1868 FC.
Early in the match against the Southern Californian club, Orange County SC striker Darwin Jones rifled a dangerous shot on target dipping away from Diaz but the Republic FC goalkeeper quickly got down and made a diving stop to his left to deny the visitors a first half lead.
Diaz made four saves on the night against Orange County on September 9
On the 2020 season, Diaz has helped guide the boys in Old Glory Red on a current eight-game unbeaten run that’s included three clean sheets and has allowed on average less than one goal per game – having surrendered seven goals across eight fixtures.
Diaz and the Indomitable Club’s next match is a Saturday night showdown in Sacramento against Tacoma Defiance on September 19. The match will be broadcast locally on KQCA My58 and Estrella TV Sacramento, as well as streamed on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
