VOTE NOW: Stellar strikes from Bijev an Chavez both nominated for Goal of the Month

By Republic FC Communications, 10/08/20, 7:30PM PDT

Fans are encouraged to cast a ballot daily for one of the boys in Old Glory Red before Monday, October 12 at 9:00 a.m. PT and help JuJu or Villyan bag the honorable monthly accolade

Republic FC midfielders Villyan Bijev and Julian Chavez have been nominated for the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month for September after Bijev buried the game-winning goal in the 87thminute against Orange County on September 9 and JuJu slammed home a left-footed stunner to seal a 2-1 win at Portland Timbers 2 on September 2.

The former Liverpool FC playmaker lifted his side – playing with just 10-men – to a dramatic 2-1 win in the closing moments of the September 9 match. Jaime Villarreal picked out the Bulgarian-born winger on the flank and Bijev rifled an effort on target that kissed the inside of the post and whizzed past the visiting goalkeeper.

The goal was his second game-winning goal this campaign after scoring from the penalty spot during Republic FC’s 1-0 win over Reno 1868 FC on August 12. Over his career in the California Capital, Bijev now has seven game-winning goals to his name. Bijev was voted by league-wide supporters with 45% of the vote as the Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 12. The Republic FC winger was also been nominated for Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 15 after curling a stunner into goal for his sides’ fourth and final strike en route to a 4-0 win over Portland Timbers 2 on October 3.

Chavez became the youngest goal scorer in Republic FC history after his stoppage time stunner ensured all three points were headed to Sacramento after netting his first career goal with the Indomitable Club’s first team. JuJu’s strike was the final kick of the match in Portland as the left-footed attempt from the product of the Republic FC Academy system solidified the 2-1 win over Timbers 2.

Be sure to alternate voting for each SRFC player daily in the days leading up to the squad’s opening round playoff fixture this weekend.

Next up for the boys in Old Glory Red is a Western Conference Quarterfinal showdown against Phoenix Rising FC this Saturday night in Arizona. The match will be broadcast locally on KQCA My58 and Estrella TV Sacramento, as well as streamed on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
