It was a season unlike any other for the Indomitable Club in 2020.
The boys in Old Glory Red had to handle a four-month long hiatus in the midst of a global pandemic and once play resumed, Mark Briggs’ men banded together and put forth an admirable effort that saw the squad earn its seventh straight trip to the postseason.
But now that the season has come to a close, Republic FC came together one last time at the annual awards ceremony to recognize and honor each of the men they went into battle with on the pitch whose work ethic went above and beyond the call of duty over the course of a challenging regular and postseason campaign.
He bagged three braces during the 2020 season including finding the back of the net twice in the first four minutes against Portland Timbers 2 on October 3 to claim the fastest brace scored in club history as Dariusz Formella was honored as the Team MVP following a team-best eight goal campaign.
When the regular season resumed in July, Formella returned to action with a pair of first half goals against Tacoma Defiance – earning him a well-deserved spot on the USL Championship Team of the Week. The Polish playmaker would find himself on the exclusive weekly list a total of three times in 2020 as Formella earned a spot on the TOTW Starting Eleven for Week 4, Week 8, and Week 15.
Since joining SRFC midway through the 2019 season, Formella has scored 10 goals in 24 regular season fixtures.
His third and final multigoal game this season was a record-breaking one as Formella beat the visiting Timbers 2 goalkeeper twice within the first four minutes of the match – etching his name in Republic FC history with the fastest brace scored in club history.
Ever since he joined the Indomitable Club prior to the 2019 season, Jordan McCrary has been nothing short of spectacular on a consistent basis for Republic FC and last week, his teammates recognized him as this season’s top man on the backline.
McCrary was recognized by his teammates as the Defensive MVP for the second straight season. The fullback was a rock once again on the wings of the SRFC defense, tallying a team-high 25 interceptions, 36 tackles, 24 tackles won, and 83 duels won. His eight interceptions against San Diego Loyal SC in early August helped solidify a shutout on the road – the first of three straight shutouts his side collected from August 1 to August 12.
McCrary made 15 appearances for the Indomitable Club in 2020, all of which were starts.
The former University of North Carolina Tar Heel contributed on the offensive end of the pitch as well where he contributed the fourth-most passes on the team this season with 535 and added two assists – one of which set up the game-winner against Portland Timbers 2 on August 22 that earned him a spot on the Week 9 USL Championship Team of the Week.
McCrary’s 1,319 minutes patrolling the pitch was the most by a Republic FC player following the regular season and postseason.
Minutes after Mario Penagos thought he had bagged a game-winning goal against Portland Timbers on September 2 and the hosts responded with a late leveler of their own, Julian Chavez produced an absolute moment of brilliance to seal a crucial road victory with the last kick of the game.
At the age of 18 years, three months and two days - JuJu’s stunning strike makes him the youngest player in Republic FC history to score during a league match after the young playmaker weaved between a pair of T2 defenders and rifled a blistering left-footed effort that was destined for the back of the net. Chavez’s game-winner was nominated for the Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month for September.
Chavez played the role of hero with the last kick of the game after entering the match in the second half.
The local youngster closed out the regular season with five appearances, one start and racking up 82 minutes of first team action in his debut season after signing a USL Academy contract prior to the start of the 2020 campaign.
