This week on The Breakaway: A Republic FC Podcast, KHTK’s Carmichael Dave joined to reminisce about last year’s historic moment, the day Major League Soccer announced that Republic would become the 29th expansion club – and the city-wide celebration.
"I remember doing the show at Solomon’s Delicatessen that morning and the mayor (Darrell Steinberg) coming in, Dave told host Connor Sutton. “And I think most importantly what I remember is the sense of accomplishment that was in the eyes of fans, owners, and team personnel."
Carmichael Dave and podcast host Connor Sutton discuss various memories, moments and stories from the day including the Block Party, the press conference and the never-ending line of people down Capitol Mall.
The long list of celebrants includes SRFC President and Chief Operating Officer, Ben Gumpert and Investor Kevin Nagle – and the stories that few people know, but ensured Republic’s rise to MLS.
In addition to the shared memories and moments, we flash back to a Breakaway episode from earlier in the year. SRFC Investor Matt Alvarez shared his aspirations for the club and the excitement surrounding bringing a new stadium and professional franchise to Sacramento. Alvarez also touched on the significance of adding a Major League Soccer franchise continuing more economic growth for the capital city.
