Republic FC midfielder Julian Chavez’s game winning goal against Portland Timbers 2 with the final kick of the contest on September 2 has marched into the Quarterfinals of the 2020 Fans’ Choice Goal of the Year competition.
The SRFC Academy product received the majority of league-wide votes in the Round of 16 bracket to advance past Jordan Doherty of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The 16-goal bracket was unveiled last Tuesday on USLChampionship.com and fans must vote for each matchup in each round. JuJu’s stunner is the fourth matchup in the Quarterfinals of the contest and fans are encouraged to vote before the polls close at 9:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, November 19 and can do so by clicking below.
With mere seconds remaining in the match against Timbers 2 in Portland, the 18-year-old Sacramento-native danced around his defender with possession and powered home a scintillating shot that guaranteed victory to Sacramento. Chavez’s stunner makes him the youngest in club history to score during league play at the age of 18 years, three months and two days old.
JuJu’s Quarterfinal opponent in the bracket is Reno 1868 FC’s Emilio Ycaza. The player that accumulates the most votes will advance to the Semifinals.
