Last week, the Indomitable Club announced the signing of defender Mitchell Taintor – a towering center back who has already made a name for himself in Sacramento.
The traditional center back played for the boys in Old Glory Red in 2018 and 2019 before joining San Antonio FC for the 2020 season but Taintor is returning to the California Capital for the 2021 USL Championship campaign hoping to make a number of positive memories including hoisting silverware following a deep postseason run.
He’s already created a few memorable moments in his two-year Republic FC career, but one in particular sticks out more than most.
On May 12, 2019, Reno 1868 FC came to Papa Murphy’s Park and ultimately left with the win but fans attending the match will surely remember Sacramento’s lone strike much more vividly than they will the final result.
The match was deadlocked nil-nil early in the heated fixture when SRFC broke through in stunning fashion in the 12th minute complements of the returning defender.
Taintor gathered a Reno clear near the center circle and after taking a few steps towards the 1868 FC defense, rifled a sizzling right-footed effort from long range that dipped towards the top corner and into the back of the net. The powerful shot blew through the hands of the visiting goalkeeper who got a touch to it but failed to prevent Sacramento from taking an early lead.
The goal itself deservedly won the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 10 of the 2019 season and claimed the No. 8 spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top Ten that evening.
Taintor is a natural leader who has a commanding presence in the heart of the central defense which is why he’s the ideal fit to play center back. But a CB that has a lethal shot and can contribute offensively as well is an invaluable weapon Head Coach Mark Briggs has in his attacking arsenal next season.
