See what the third week of camp had in store for Mark Briggs’ men as they prep for the 2021 campaign

Training camp at Cosumnes River College is well under way and the Indomitable Club is working its way towards the USL Championship regular season ahead.

While Rafael Diaz and Kharlton Belmar continued to shine for their respective countries during World Cup Qualifiers, the rest of the boys in Old Glory Red returned from a tune-up trip over the weekend in Utah where the squad took on MLS-side Real Salt Lake in a friendly.

Following the preseason test against a top tier domestic opponent, Mark Briggs’ men earned a well-deserved day off on Monday, but the following day brought some massive news from the league headquarters.

On Tuesday, the USL announced the full schedule for the 2021 Championship campaign including all of Republic FC’s 16 games prior to what will hopefully be an eighth consecutive trip to the postseason.

On Wednesday while the Republic FC Kickstart winner was being announced, the boys in Old Glory Red took the pitch for another day of training under the California sun. The day also happened to mark exactly 30 days out from the regular season opener when SRFC kicks off its campaign on the road against LA Galaxy II.

As the days rolled by, the intensity at training only continued to rise with players giving it their all, in hopes of impressing the coaches. It was also a major boost to know that fans will be allowed in attendance at home matches in 2021.

On this week’s episode of The Breakaway, Connor is joined by the Indomitable Club’s leading scorer from last year – Darius Formella – who is looking to build on an extremely positive previous season.

On Thursday, Nicholas Murray of USL HQ named the Top Five USL Goalkeepers heading into 2021 and Rafael Diaz’s name was right at the top of the list. Diaz is fresh off posting a pair of clean sheets with the Dominican Republic while on international duty.

But perhaps one of the best parts of this past week was Equipment Manager Alejandro Caparelli giving SRFC supporters an exclusive and inside look into the behind-the-scenes of training camp. From the locker room music, his words of encouragement to players during practice, to his glaring disdain for players cutting their socks – hanging out with Capi is a must-watch!

The boys in Old Glory Red continue their preseason tune-up tour in San Jose against the Earthquakes on Friday featuring four, 30-minute periods. Republic FC kicks off its regular season campaign against Los Dos on April 30.
