Republic FC posts second clean sheet of 2021 in 0-0 draw with Bay Area rivals.

Republic FC play to their second draw in as many matches against Oakland Roots SC. While the Boys in Old Glory Red would have no trouble generating scoring chances throughout the match, they were unable to break through against their Northern California rivals despite outshooting them 19-2.

Oakland would hold the edge in possession through the opening 45 minutes, but Republic FC kept their Northern California rivals at bay for the entire first half, outshooting their opponents 10-0. Three saves by Roots SC goalkeeper Taylor Bailey would keep the score even heading into the half for the visitors.

Chances remained plentiful for the hosts throughout the remainder of the match, but Republic FC was unable to break the stalemate before the final whistle despite excellent looks late from forward Darek Formella and defender Duke Lacroix.

"We played some good through balls, got into the final third in the right areas and at the right time," said Head Coach Mark Briggs. "It's just that final moment, that final decision, that final pass that was lacking tonight."

The Republic FC defensive unit put together an excellent showing in their second straight contest, keeping the visitors shotless until the 70th minute behind excellent individual performances from Mitch Taintor and Shannon Gomez. Their effort marked the club’s second clean sheet of the 2021 campaign and first since their season opening victory against LA Galaxy II on April 30.

Academy product Mario Penagos made his second start of the season after a good showing on Saturday in San Diego. The 19 year-old midfielder’s second straight nod marked the 8th consecutive match to feature a Republic FC Academy alumni.

SRFC will welcome Orange County SC for their third match in seven days on Saturday, July 11. Kickoff is slated for 8:00PM PT at Heart Health Park in Sacramento, CA. The match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV, and streamed on ESPN+.
