LAS VEGAS, Nevada (September 5, 2021) – Three second half scores put Republic FC Sacramento over Las Vegas by a score of 3-1 on Sunday night.
A 73rd minute strike from Luis Felipe and Julian Chavez’s second professional score headlined a great second half for Sacramento, as they set a new club record of eight straight road matches without a loss and notched their fourth victory over Las Vegas this season.
Las Vegas opened the scoring in the 12th minute, after Jordan McCrary and Nabi Kibunguchy neutralized a good chance for the hosts. An unlucky bounce allowed Lights FC forward Christopher Jaime to put a shot past Diaz to put the Nevadan club up 1-0.
As the first half winded down, Sacramento would begin to knock on the door. Dan Casey would put a head on an Emil Cuello corner kick in the 39th minute, but the attempt would go high. Just two minutes later, Cameron Iwasa put a good cross in through the middle, but the Las Vegas defense did well to keep Sacramento attackers from capitalizing.
“Tonight was a tale of two halves," said coach Mark Briggs. "The first half could have been a lot better, but in the second half we played with the intensity, we showed a desire, and we showed urgency. And we showed quality- we scored three quality goals just because we showed urgency and we wanted it.”
An own goal from Las Vegas allowed Republic FC to draw even in the 56th minute. After dribbling into the penalty box, a shot from Cameron Iwasa deflected off Lights FC midfielder Frank Daroma and into goal for the Indomitable Club.
Sacramento took the lead on an excellent strike from Luis Felipe in the 73rd minute, when the midfielder drilled a shot through after an errant clearance from Las Vegas bounced out into space. The score was his third of the season, and first since his July 31 brace against New York Red Bulls II.
After coming on for Mario Penagos at halftime, Julian Chavez impressed in 45 minutes against Lights FC. Chavez added some insurance for Sacramento in the 88th minute, banging a shot past Lights FC keeper Alex Rando. The 19 year old academy product paced Republic FC with three shots alongside Luis Felipe and Emil Cuello, putting two on target for the match.
All but four Republic FC players completed less than 80% of their passes, helping the Indomitable Club to hold a 53% edge in possession. Sacramento would outshoot Las Vegas 9-3 in the second half, including four shots on target.
Sacramento will take to the pitch next on Saturday, September 11 on the road against El Paso Locomotive FC in an inter-division meeting. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and the match will be broadcast on KQCA My58, Estrella TV Sacramento, and streamed live on ESPN+.
