Entering his second pro season in 2021, Danny Vitiello had a lot of expectations looking down at him coming off Golden Glove honors during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

Despite the pressure, the Massepequa, New York native met every one of them in 2021. Pittsburgh’s main man between the posts put together a full season of excellent form, helping his club to the postseason for the second straight year while directing one of the league’s best defensive units. Ahead of his first season in the Indomitable City, it’s a good time for a look at some of his best saves from last season.

Get on Up

Midway through the first half of a June meeting with New York Red Bulls II, Vitiello showed off his vertical, deflecting away what looked to be a deadly strike into the upper left corner. The stop kept his team’s early lead intact in what ended as a 2-1 victory.

No Comebacks for You

Up 2-0 on Tampa Bay Rowdies on October 10, Vitiello neutralized a strong set piece opportunity from the visitors in the 82nd minute. The save kept Pittsburgh’s clean sheet intact and thus, Tampa’s comeback at bay.

Long Range? No Problem

Just before half in a match with Hartford Athletic, a long-range chance from the visitors threatened to put Pittsburgh at a deficit heading to the break. The difficult stop kept things scoreless, allowing Vitiello to record his ninth clean sheet of the year to close the regular season.
