Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2

Sacramento Republic FC travel north to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sunday, Apr. 10. Kickoff is 3 p.m. PDT at University of British Colombia’s Thunderbird Stadium.

This is the third meeting between the clubs, with Republic FC winning the previous two meetings. Republic FC has outscored Whitecaps FC 2 4-1, including a 2-0 shutout victory on Apr. 15, 2015.

Republic FC enter the match on their best start in franchise history, earning six points in their first two matches. Republic FC won their 2016 USL Home Opener 1-0 against Arizona United SC behind a late goal from forward Cameron Iwasa on Saturday, Apr. 2.

Defender James Kiffe was named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 2 for his performance against Arizona United SC. Kiffe was part of a defense that included Derek ForanChris ChrisitanEmrah Klimenta and goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek who limited Arizona to just two shots and no shots on goal. Kiffe also assisted Iwasa’s late match-winning goal.

Iwasa’s goal was his second USL goal and his first USL goal at Bonney Field. He also previously scored at Bonney Field in a friendly match against English Premier League side Sunderland AFC on July 14, 2015.

Republic FC’s defense has been one of the best in the league to start the season. Republic FC and San Antonio FC are one of two teams to have not conceded a goal to start the season, with San Antonio FC having played just one match. Republic FC has allowed just one shot on goal this season.

The match is Whitecaps FC 2’s USL Home Opener after starting the season with two straight road matches. Whitecaps FC 2 have also won both of their matches to start the season, defeating Orange County Blues FC 1-0 on Mar. 26 and Portland Timbers 2 3-1 on Apr. 2.

Whitecaps FC 2 are led by Daniel Haber who was recently named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 2 after his brace against T2 on Apr. 2. He is now tied with Kyle Greig for the club lead in goals with two. Haber spent last season with Hapoel Nir Ramat HaSharon FC, a second division Israeli club, scoring five goals.

Greig has scored a goal in each of Whitecaps FC 2’s matches this season. He spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma City Energy FC scoring 16 goals and recording three assists with the USL club, including a goal in a 2-1 loss against Republic FC on Aug. 9, 2014. Greig and Haber have combined for all of Whitecaps FC 2’s goals this season.

Whitecaps FC 2’s defense has also been impressive this season allowing just one goal in two matches. Goalkeepers Spencer Richey and Sean Melvin have both been strong in goal with each making a start and making a combined seven saves while allowing just one goal on the season.
