By Sean Steimel, 07/21/14, 3:00PM PDT

An early penalty kick proved to be the difference as West Bromwich Albion defeated Sacramento Republic FC 1-0. Republic FC controlled possession and outshot their English Premier League opponent but were unable to find a goal.

West Bromwich Albion was the attacking team early in the match, earning a free kick and a corner in the first five minutes. They would capitalize on possession in the 12th minute when forward Victor Anichebe was fouled inside the box by Republic FC defender Nemanja Vuković. West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans stepped up to the spot and sent the penalty kick into the right side of the net past Republic FC keeper Jake Gleeson, who dove left putting West Bromwich Albion up 1-0.

In the 33rd minute Republic FC saw their best chance of the first half when midfielder Octavio Guzman sent a lofty cross into the box. Republic FC forward Tommy Thompson got his head to the ball to send it back across the face of goal. The ball bounced around and eventually caromed back to Thompson at the edge of the six-yard box whose shot was just wide right.

The half would end with the score still 1-0. Republic FC came out as the aggressor in the second half as West Bromwich Albion seemed content to defend the lead and look to counter attack.

In the 66th minute the West Bromwich Albion defense made a slow pass across the back that midfielder Rodrigo Lopez was able to steal away. Lopez quickly played a through ball to substitute forward Thomas Stewart who went one-on-one with West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Biaz Myhill who made a diving save to preserve the lead.

In the 82nd minute West Bromwich Albion midfielder Craig Gardner received his second yellow card of the match and was sent off. Republic FC pressed to find an equalizer but were unable to score.

“It was a good game, I thought we played pretty good,” said Republic FC head coach Preki after the friendly. “We can tell they are a quality team and if you make a mistake they will punish you.”
