Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Real Monarchs SLC

May 13, 2017; 6:30 p.m. PDT Kickoff

Sacramento Republic FC (3-4-1, 10 pts.) will play the final match in their three-match road stretch when they travel to Utah to take on Real Monarchs SLC (6-1-0, 18 pts.) on Saturday, May 13.  Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. PT at Rio Tinto Stadium.   The match will be streamed live at Republic FC will host two official watch parties at de Vere’s Irish Pub in downtown Sacramento and SacTown Sports Bar in Old Sacramento.

This is the first of two matches between Sacramento Republic FC and Real Monarchs SLC this season.  Republic FC defeated the Monarchs twice in 2016, winning 1-0 on Jun. 8 and 2-1 on Jun. 11.  The Monarchs won the last matchup of 2016, 3-2 on Jul. 6. Republic FC enter the match following a hard fought 1-0 loss to the Western Conference-leading San Antonio FC on Saturday, May 6.  San Antonio FC scored the only goal of the match on a penalty in the 64th minute. The match was Republic FC’s first USL loss in the month of May since May 23, 2015 when they lost 2-1 to Oklahoma City Energy FC.  It is also the first USL loss in the month of May for Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle.

Midfielder Danny Barrera recorded a goal and an assist against Real Monarchs SLC on Jul. 6, 2016.  At the time, Barrera had recorded an assist in four straight matches, a Republic FC record which he would stretch to five straight matches.  Barrera went on to record nine assists in 2016, the most of any Republic FC player in a single season.  The midfielder has one assist this season.

Forward Tyler Blackwood had some strong performances against Real Monarchs SLC in 2016.  Playing for the then Arizona United SC (now known as Phoenix Rising FC), Blackwood recorded two goals in three starts against the Monarchs, including the match-winning goal on Apr. 15, 2016.

Real Monarchs SLC come into the match on a three-match winning streak after defeating LA Galaxy II 3-0 on Wednesday, May 10.  The Monarchs have started the season strong, going 6-0-1 through their first seven matches, something they have not done in past seasons, going a combined 3-7-4 in their first seven matches of 2015 and 2016.

Forward Chandler Hoffman leads a Monarchs offense that has scored 18 goals this season and has scored two or more goals in all but one of their matches this season.  Hoffman has four goals and two assists on the season.  The forward joined the Monarchs during the offseason after scoring 14 goals in 2016, tied for fourth most in the USL.

Republic FC will host two official watch parties at de Vere’s Irish Pub in downtown Sacramento and SacTown Sports Bar in Old Sacramento.  de Vere’s Irish Pub is located at 1521 L St and SacTown Sports Bar is located at 106 J St.  Fans are encouraged to arrive early for best seating.  The match will be streamed live on and the USL Match Center.
