Sacramento Republic FC (7-6-3, 24 pts.) return home to USL play when they host San Antonio FC (10-1-4, 34 pts.) on Saturday, July 1. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park. The match will be broadcast on CW31 and Sports 1140 KHTK. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com.
This is the second and final meeting between Republic FC and San Antonio FC this season. San Antonio FC squeaked out a 1-0 victory over Republic FC in the first match between the two on May 6. Rafa Castillo’s 64th minute penalty proved to be the difference in a closely contested early season match.
Republic FC enter the match on a three-match USL win streak, their second such streak of the season. During the streak, Republic FC have outscored their opponents 11-5 and have scored two or more goals in each of the three matches.
Forward Trevin Caesar has been strong in league play as of late, scoring four goals and recording two assists during Republic FC’s current win streak. Caesar scored three goals against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Jun. 21, recording only the second USL hat trick in Republic FC history. Caesar is tied for the club-lead in USL goals with five.
Wilson Kneeshaw has also been on a good run of form lately, scoring a goal and recording three assists during Republic FC’s win streak. Kneeshaw now leads the club with four USL assists on the season. Kneeshaw joins Caesar and Sammy Ochoa as Republic FC players with at least two goals and two assists on the season.
Midfielders Tyler Blackwood, Agustin Cazarez and Jeremy Hall have also been a large part of Republic FC’s efforts, combining for four goals and three assists during the winning streak. Blackwood is second on the club with four goals on the season, having scorded in back-to-back USL matches this season for the first time. Cazarez is now tied for second in USL assists on the season and recorded assists in back-to-back matches for the first time in his career.
San Antonio FC come into the match following their first loss of the season. San Antonio FC fell 0-1 to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Jun. 24. They began the season on a 14-match unbeaten streak, the longest streak in the USL this season. Interestingly enough, San Antonio FC and Real Monarchs SLC have each lost a single match this season, both to Switchbacks FC.
Forward Billy Forbes has been a large part of San Antonio FC’s early season success, scoring six goals and recording four assists on the season. Forbes leads San Antonio FC in both categories. Forbes joined San Antonio FC after spending the 2014-2016 seasons in the NASL with both the San Antonio Scorpions and Rayo OKC.
San Antonio FC will be without their starting goalkeeper Diego Restrepo as he will be suspended for the match. Restrepo received a red card on Saturday, Jun. 24 against Rio Grande Valley will be serving his one-game suspension.
