Sacramento Republic FC return to USL play after a two week break when they host Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday, Aug. 5. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park. The match will be broadcast on CW31. Tickets are still available at SacRepublicFC.com.
The match is the third and final meeting between Republic FC and WFC2 this season. Republic FC have a slight advantage in the season series, winning the second match 2-1 on Jun. 17 after the two played to a scoreless draw on Apr. 29. Republic FC hold an all-time 3-1-2 record against WFC2, with three of the six overall matches ending in a scoreless draw.
Republic FC are currently riding a five-match unbeaten streak dating back to their last match against WFC2, a 2-1 win on Jun. 17. During that span Republic FC have won four of five matches, outscoring their opponents 14-6 and scoring one goal or less only once during that span.
Forward Sammy Ochoa started his first match since Jun. 17, when he started against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Jul. 23, recording both of the assists in Republic FC’s 2-0 win. Ochoa now has five USL assists on the season, the most in the club. The forward has also scored five goals on the season, trailing only Trevin Caesar for second on the club.
Caesar has been in good form lately, scoring five goals in his last four USL appearances, including the match-winning goal against S2 on Sunday, Jul. 23. The forward has recorded two assists during the five-match unbeaten streak. Caesar now averages a goal every 121 minutes played this season, the best mark on the club.
Wilson Kneeshaw has also been in good form of late, recording three assists and scoring a goal during the unbeaten streak. The forward moved himself into a tie for second on the club with four assists on the season. Kneeshaw, Ochoa and Caesar have combined for 14 goals and 11 assists on the season, including six goals and seven assists in the last five matches.
WFC2 enter the match with a nine-match winless streak, during which they have gone 0-4-5. Most recently, WFC2 drew 3-3 with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Two penalties, including one in stoppage time, undid a young WFC2 side, whose average age is just 21 years old.
Midfielder Marco Bustos has been important to the WFC2 attack this season, scoring five goals and adding an assist in just eight appearances this season. Bustos has now scored 19 goals in three seasons with WFC2, after being signed as a Homegrown player by Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS). Bustos was ranked ninth last season in the USL’s Twenty-under-Twenty list after scoring 14 goals in his first two seasons and leading WFC2 to the playoffs in 2016.
Defender Deklan Wynne and forward Myer Bevan received a call-up for the New Zealand Men’s National Team for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September. This was the first call-up for Bevan, while Wynne has earned 19 caps for the Kiwis. Wynne has a goal and an assist this season, while Bevan has recorded a goal.
