Sacramento Republic FC return home when they host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park. The match will be broadcast on CW31. Tickets are available at SacRepublicFC.com. At least 100 tickets will also be available for walkup purchase.
The match is the first of two meetings between Republic FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC this season. The Switchbacks won the only match between the two clubs last season 1-0 on Jul. 16, 2016. Republic FC have never beat the Switchbacks, going 0-2-1 all-time against Colorado Springs.
Republic FC come into the match after falling 1-3 to Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, Aug. 26. The loss was only their second loss in their last ten matches. Republic FC have won six matches of their last ten matches, including two three-match win streaks.
Defender James Kiffe made his 99th career all-competition appearance for Republic FC against Phoenix. Should he make an appearance against the Switchbacks, it would be his 100th as a member of Republic FC. Kiffe would be just the second player in Republic FC history to achieve the feat, joining fellow defender Emrah Klimenta who made his 100th appearance on Jun. 3.
Klimenta received a call-up to the Montenegro National Team, his third as a member of Republic FC and his second this season. Klimenta will play in World Cup Qualifying Matches against Kazakhstan (Sept. 1) and Romania (Sept. 4). He will be unavailable for Republic FC’s match on Saturday, but will return on Sept. 5.
Forward Trevin Caesar scored the lone goal for Republic FC on Saturday. The goal was his seventh of the season, giving Caesar the club lead. Caesar was called up to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team for World Cup Qualifying, however because of the cancelation of his flight due to Hurricane Harvey, he was unable to travel and will remain with the club.
The Switchbacks enter the match having dropped their last two matches, including a 2-1 loss to LA Galaxy II in their last match on Aug. 18. Defender Sean McFarlane redirected a Jack McBean cross into his own goal in the 87th minute that proved to be the winning goal, despite a long volley attempt by McFarlane two minutes into stoppage time that hit the post.
Forward Kevaughn Frater leads a Switchbacks offense that has scored 43 goals this season, third most in the USL Western Conference. Frater has scored eight goals and recorded six assists on the season, leading the Switchbacks in both categories. Frater joined the Switchbacks after playing the 2016 season with Real Monarchs SLC, where he scored a goal and an assist in his first USL season.
The Switchbacks signed the ninth-ranked PDL prospect Tobenna Uzo on Aug. 29. The 22-year-old forward scored 13 goals and added three assists in 14 appearances with the Myrtle Beach Mutiny. The Nigeria-native was drafted in the fourth round of the MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City SC, but did not sign a contract.
