This week, Republic FC unveiled former MLS standout Todd Dunivant as the club’s new general manager. Dunivant, who is already serving in the role, has helped shape Republic FC’s roster as the club heads into the 2018 season. The five-time MLS champion arrives at Republic FC after serving in a similar role for the San Francisco Deltas, having contributed heavily to building the team that took home the 2017 NASL Championship in their inaugural year.
In his role with Republic FC, Dunivant will lead the establishment and maintenance of the club’s playing philosophy and culture, overseeing its implementation across all levels of the club’s Football Operations, from the first team to the SRFC USSDA Academy teams. Dunivant will also oversee the technical staff, scouting recruitment and player contract negotiations.
“Todd has meaningful experience across all aspects of the game. From a top player, to team captain and leader, he understands the important and relevant connection that occurs between the players, our club and our fans,” said Republic FC Chairman and CEO Kevin Nagle. “He knows that to build a winning culture and philosophy it will take more than identifying and recruiting exceptional talent. It will also take signing players that wear our crest with passion for the sport and love for our region.”
Dunivant was a first team All-American at Stanford, playing for the Cardinal from 1999-2002. He was selected sixth overall in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. Over the course of his career, Dunivant made over 300 MLS career appearances with the San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, recording 200 of those with LA Galaxy. Dunivant won five MLS Cups during his career: four with the Galaxy and one with the Earthquakes. The defender also took home two Supporters’ Shields and an U.S. Open Cup.
Joining Dunivant in the changes to the Republic FC Football Operations staff is Simon Elliott, who takes on the head coaching position after the mutual decision of Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle and Republic FC to part ways. Elliott is no stranger to the club, having taken charge of the U-15/16s and U-17s in 2015 ahead of the the Republic FC Academy's inaugural season.
“For us, it’s not just about bringing players up, it’s about bringing coaches up as well,” said Dunivant. “When the opportunity came up to grab Simon Elliott as head coach, it was a no brainer for us. It was an easy decision, one that we feel very good about. The future of this club in his hands is extremely bright. “
Elliott led the U-15/16s to consecutive playoff appearances since the Academy’s first season, with this season’s U-17s also poised to make another playoff run in the USSDA. Under his leadership, seven players from his Academy teams have been called up to various levels of the U.S. Youth National Team, with the most recent call-up having been this past January. Elliott was recognized in the 2016-2017 USSDA End of Year Awards as the Western Conference U-15/16 Coach of the Year.
The New Zealand native transitioned into scouting and recruitment after a successful playing career at both the club and international levels. Like Dunivant, Elliott played collegiate soccer at Stanford, making 45 appearances, scoring 13 goals and recording 12 assists across two seasons. Elliott began his professional career at LA Galaxy, one of four MLS clubs he would eventually suit up for, the others being Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA. Elliott also spent three seasons in the Premier League with Fulham.
On the international front, Elliott was a New Zealand Men’s National Team regular, earning 69 caps. He helped the team clinch a spot for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the second time in history the All Whites achieved this feat, having not made an appearance since their first in 1982. New Zealand were undefeated in the 2010 World Cup, posting three straight draws in the group stages and just missing out on the Round of 16.
