Sacramento Republic FC takes on Orange County FC for the second time this season, hosting the Southern California team at Papa Murphy’s Park. Looking to replicate their early season success against OC, refresh your knowledge on Republic FC’s opponent, Orange County SC.
Coming into Saturday night, Orange County SC sits just a single point back of Sac Republic in the Western Conference Standings. Earning points in three of their last five games, OC has racked up a 6-3-2 record including their most recent 3-0 shutout victory over Fresno FC. Orange County had a strong stretch from late March to early April in which they recorded four straight shutouts, outscoring their opponents 12-0. Their best performance came in their March 31 rout of Tulsa Roughnecks FC, as they took an early lead in the 15th minute before going up by three goals before the break. A pair of red cards on Tulsa allowed OC to cruise to victory over the nine-man Roughnecks.
Thomas Enevoldsen has by far led Orange County SC this year in scoring, netting six goals in his 11 games played. He currently ranks tied for fourth among the USL’s top goal scorers. However, Enevoldsen’s attacking prowess hasn’t been his only strength this season. His playmaking skills have him tied for the team lead in assists (3), and within OC’s top three for his conversion rate (24 percent).
27-year-old Danish center back Thomas Juel-Nielsen has been strong off the back line for Orange County this season with his pinpoint ball control. His passing accuracy over the course of 273 passes leads the team (88.3) and has earned a 95.2 percent accuracy mark within his own half. He ranks third in ariel duels won with 21, as well as clearances with 15.
Aodhan Quinn has played the distributor for OC in 2018 from the midfield. Racking up 767 passes in his 11 matches played, Quinn has contributed 69.7 passes per game, connecting at a 75.1 percent clip. He’s also notched two assists and 21 key passes on the year, while twice netting a goal of his own.
Orange County SC has been marginally better at home this season than they have been on the road. With a 3-1-2 record at Champions Soccer Stadium at OC Park, OC has come away with 11 of 18 possible points at home, while managing a 3-2-0 record on the road.
Orange County and Republic FC last met on March 24 at Champions Soccer Stadium at OC Park, for Sacramento’s second game of the season. Sac Republic came away with three points in a 1-0 shutout of Orange County, thanks to a lone goal by Cameron Iwasa. Orange County had a pair of early chances in the match, including an empty-net opportunity when Josh Cohen came off his line to clear a long ball, but a mistimed play allowed Hashimoto to take a shot from inside the box that was subsequently saved by defender Cole Seiler. Sacramento finally broke through in the 66th minute, when Iwasa possessed a long ball, before taking a near post shot inside the box to break the deadlock.
Saturday’s match featuring Republic FC and Orange County SC, presented by UC Davis Health, will kick off at 8:00 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park.
