Sacramento Republic FC defender Mitchell Taintor has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 12. This is the second time in the 2018 season that Taintor has received USL Team of the Week honors, being named back in Week 2.
Taintor was a crucial part of Republic FC’s defense in the club’s shutout win against Orange County SC. The defender recorded six clearances, four interceptions and won seven of 10 duels in the match as Republic FC took a 1-0 win at Papa Murphy’s Park.
The 23-year-old defender was the first Republic FC player to receive Team of the Week honors in the 2018 USL season, being named in Week 2. Since then, Taintor has continued his strong performance in the Republic FC backline, starting and playing in 12 of 13 USL matches for Sacramento. He was also loaned to MLS club Toronto FC on April 21, not only making his MLS debut as a starter but also notching his first MLS goal.
So far in the 2018 season, three other Republic FC players have been named to the USL Team of the Week. Jaime Villarreal was named for Week 4, Villyan Bijev for Week 6, and Josh Cohen for Week 10. Taintor is the only player to have been named to the Team of the Week twice this season.
Republic FC are back in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action this Wednesday when they host Seattle Sounders FC in the Fourth Round. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Papa Murphy's Park. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com.
