Sacramento Republic FC forward Cameron Iwasa has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 18 for outstanding performance in Republic FC’s 3-1 win over Swope Park Rangers. Defender Shannon Gomez joins Iwasa on the Team of the Week as well.
Iwasa had a hand in each of Republic FC’s three goals against Swope Park, including a brace for himself. With his first goal of the match in the 45th minute, Iwasa broke the the club all-time record for most goals scored in USL play, previously held by Rodrigo Lopez. He nabbed his brace in the 54th minute with a diving header on a perfect cross from Emrah Klimenta. Iwasa would turn provider for Republic FC’s third goal of the night, sending in a through ball for Eissele to slam it into the back of the net and secure all three points for Sacramento.
For his part, Gomez shone brightly as part of a Republic FC backline that allowed just one goal across 180 minutes, with Sacramento picking up a clean sheet against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and conceding one goal against Swope Park Rangers. Gomez made 12 interceptions and won seven tackles as Republic FC across the two-match road trip.
Iwasa becomes the first Republic FC player to be named the USL Player of the Week in the 2018 season. This is also the first time this season that two Republic FC players have been named to the same Team of the Week. So far in 2018, seven Republic FC players have been named to the Team of the Week: Mitchell Taintor (Week 2, 12); Jaime Villarreal (Week 4), Villyan Bijev (Week 6), Josh Cohen (Week 10), and Justin Schmidt (Week 14).
The boys are back in action this Saturday at Papa Murphy’s Park when they take on Oklahoma City Energy FC. Tickets to the match will also get you free admission to the California State Fair that day, and start at just $16.
