Republic FC return to Papa Murphy’s Park this Wednesday, October 3, to take on Swope Park Rangers as the club seeks to clinch a home playoffs berth. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live KQCA My58, Estrella TV (Spanish), ESPN+ and Sports 1140 KHTK.
Sacramento could clinch a home playoffs berth with a win on Wednesday if Reno 1868 FC or if Real Monarchs SLC drop points in their respective matchups that same night.
Republic FC (16-7-8, 56 points) currently sit third in the Western Conference after defeating Timbers 2 over the weekend. Cameron Iwasa scored his 15th goal of the season, while Josh Cohen recorded his 11th shutout this year—tied for best in the Western Conference—to give Sacramento a vital 1-0 win in the race to clinch a top-four finish that would yield a home playoffs match.
Swope Park Rangers (14-10-8, 50 points) are headed to Sacramento for their last road game of the season. The Midwestern club is coming off a week-long break after drawing 1-1 with Tulsa Roughnecks on September 22nd. Currently seventh in the Western Conference, Rangers can still potentially earn a top-four spot, but will need to win its remaining two games and hope for favorable results elsewhere.
Since their first meeting in 2016, Republic FC holds an all-time record of 1-2-2 against their Midwestern rivals. Sacramento took the most recent contest, a 3-1 win at Children’s Mercy Park on July 10. Iwasa, who featured for Swope Park Rangers last season, scored a brace and recorded an assist against his previous club.
Two former Republic FC players have featured heavily for Rangers this season. Midfielder Chase Minter has made 25 appearances on the year, while Tyler Blackwood has notched six goals in 27 starts for the club. Minter played the 2016 USL season for Sacramento and Blackwood manned the wing for Republic in the 2017 season.
Swope Park is led by Head Coach Paulo Nagamura, a two-time MLS Cup winner in his 12-year MLS career. Nagamura was an assistant on the 2017 Rangers staff after retiring from his playing days following the 2016 MLS season with parent club Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura was a teammate of Republic FC Technical Director Todd Dunivant on the 2005 MLS Cup Champion LA Galaxy side.
SRFC midfielder Adam Moffat has been ruled out for 10 weeks after suffering a torn MCL on his right knee during the club’s match against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on September 8th. He joins Jaime Villarreal on the injury list, who sustained a right foot injury against LA Galaxy II on August 18th. Villarreal underwent successful surgery on his foot and will miss the rest of the regular season.
