Republic FC, in partnership with Western Health Advantage, is proud to launch the Buddy Bench initiative across the Sacramento region. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, 11 local elementary schools will soon have a new Buddy Bench—a dedicated space where students can connect, make new friends, and feel supported. These benches are more than just places to sit; they are a symbol of inclusivity and a simple yet powerful tool to help children struggling with loneliness. The Buddy Bench program is part of our ongoing commitment to addressing mental health concerns and fostering a sense of community in our schools and beyond.
How it Works: Creating a Safe Space for Connection
The concept of a Buddy Bench is simple, yet powerful. When a student feels lonely, left out, or in need of someone to talk to, they can sit on the Buddy Bench. This signals to their classmates and teachers that they may need a friend or some support.
Once a student sits on the bench, others are encouraged to approach them, offering a chance to chat, play, or simply be there for them. It’s a subtle but effective way to foster kindness, inclusion, and open communication about mental health in schools. The Buddy Bench isn’t just a place to sit—it’s a symbol of community and compassion, helping to ensure no child feels isolated or excluded.
In addition to providing a space for connection, Buddy Benches also help teachers and school staff observe and support students who may need extra care or attention. By raising awareness and opening up the conversation about loneliness and mental health, we’re giving children the tools to care for themselves and each other.
