During Mental Health Month, Republic FC and Western Health Advantage are encouraging fans to reach out to their friends, family, and neighbors to say “Let’s Kick It.” The simple phrase can serve as a conversation starter to create a space for connection, support, and discussions about mental health.
A new shirt and sticker pack are now available at the Team Store. In addition to a custom-designed character, the collection also features the “Let’s Kick It” message, as well as the logo for 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Since 2023, 988 has been highlighted on the sleeve of Republic FC jerseys, driving awareness for the lifesaving resource that is available across the country 24/7.
A portion of proceeds from the “Let’s Kick It” collection will benefit Sacramento-based nonprofit WellSpace Health, which operates the second-largest 988 Crisis Center in California and answers more than 100,000 calls, texts, and chats for people experiencing mental health and substance abuse issues.
Whether it’s watching a match together at home, heading to Heart Health Park to see Republic FC, or playing a friendly game outside, soccer is just one of the many ways in which friends can connect.
Research suggests that stable, healthy friendships are crucial for our well-being, mentally and physically. A 2023 study found that having at least one conversation with a friend per day can have a significant effect on a person’s mental health, significantly reducing feelings of stress, anxiety, and well-being, while also having a directly positive effect on overall mood and behavior. The conversations studied covered a wide range of topics, including general catchups, joking around, and offering compliments – showing that moments with friends aren’t required to be long or extremely deep to have an impact.
At Republic FC’s May 25 match, “Let’s Kick It” postcards – along with prepaid postage sponsored by Western Health Advantage – will be distributed to fans, providing another avenue for people to reach out to their friends. The partners will continue to share messaging around the importance of mental health, 988, and additional resources throughout the month.
