Republic FC advanced to the Round of 32 for the fifth consecutive season with an impressive 4-0 win over UPSL side Valley 559 FC on Tuesday night. Sacramento took the lead in the 11th minute courtesy of Lee Desmond and never looked back. The night ended with a brace for Kyle Edwards, a two-assist and one-goal performance for Dominik Wanner, and a debut assist for Brandon Cambridge. Through its first two matches of the 2026 tournament, the Indomitable Club has not allowed a single goal.
The April 14 match marks the first-ever match between Republic FC and Minnesota United. MLS opponents have become a regular occurrence for the Indomitable Club in Cup play, with eight matchups over the last four seasons. Since its inaugural season, the club has six “Cupsets” over higher-seeded teams, more than any other USL club, and amassed an impressive 21 home tournament wins.
Sixteen MLS clubs will enter the Round of 32 against the 16 Second Round winners. Minnesota United first appeared in the U.S. Open Cup in 2013 as an NASL Club and has entered the tournament 10 times. Two years after moving to Major League Soccer, the Loons reached the Open Cup final against Atlanta United. Last year, they reached the Semifinals after ousting USL regular season champions Louisville City, as well as fellow MLS sides St. Louis City SC and Chicago Fire. In six previous matches against lower-division sides, MNUFC lost just once since joining MLS.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is American soccer’s National Championship and has crowned a winner annually since 1914 (with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The historic tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States and the world’s third-longest continuously run national cup tournament.
The Quails return to action this Saturday with a regular season home match against Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are still available at SacRepublicFC.com.
