Midfielder Drew Skundrich bagged a stunning strike in the first half and a number of new faces made their Republic FC first team debuts over the weekend. Both Skundrich and Head Coach Mark Briggs met with media after the match and here’s what they had to say following the match…

Head Coach Mark Briggs
On the opening night result…
"I just said to the players there, we’re one point better off than we were before we started, so that's a positive. It's not the end of the world. We didn't win the game like we wanted to. I thought we could have been a bit more clinical in front of goal with our final pass, our final shot, whatever that may be and I think the game would have been different."
On the physical play…
"You can't take away the physicality and the aggression of the players. I asked them to be to be intense in what they do. I ask them to be aggressive in what they do and sometimes you're gonna concede fouls and you're gonna get cards against you, so I'll never ask them to not be aggressive."
On Sargis and Penagos in the starting lineup…
"I have full confidence in Mario and Hayden, and I think they both performed well. They both performed to a high standard and to be honest, they performed what I expect them to perform. It's not a surprise for me to see them step on the field and do what they do. So I'm really happy for them, especially for like Hayden and Mario to play in the home opener and all their family and friends be here, it's a pretty special moment for them."
On Juan Barahona's performance…
"Yeah, I thought he was another player that performs to a really high standard. Juan’s an exceptional footballer. He reads the game very well and defensively is clever and puts his body in the right areas. His left foot is a step ahead and the technique he possesses with his left foot is fantastic, so it's a huge weapon for us to have and a huge tool for us to utilize."
Midfielder Drew Skundrich
On the match against Tulsa…
"Obviously we wanted to win the game tonight. Coach Briggs probably said that, but it's still a point, we had zero to start the season so it's always good to get to get one under our belts. I thought we played well… created a lot of chances … had that one mental lapse at the end to give up the goal, which is unfortunate but there are a lot of positives a lot of things to take away, and we're just gonna try to get better and keep moving on."
On the energy from the fans…
"The fans are absolutely incredible here. We couldn't do it without them. We're so thankful for them and we feed off of their energy, so the more support we get, the better we can play."
On the physicality of the match…
"We try to be pretty versatile and in our play. We like to battle, we like to play soccer so whatever comes our way we have to be prepared for it no matter what."
On the goal…
"It was a great long ball, Juan had great composure down there… picked up his head. I made the late run and had a couple of touches and then put it home. It was a great team goal. I mean it started off with Juan and composure is kind of contagious. He was really composed on the ball picked his head up, found me, and then I wanted to take a touch kind of out of my feet just so I could get a cleaner shot on goal, and I saw a defender closing too much… he kind of over oversold himself. So I was able to cut back on my left and then once I saw another guy coming in, I knew he was gonna stretch out for the ball so I just shot him between his legs and it went in."

A number of Republic FC players made their Indomitable Club debuts against FC Tulsa, including defender Hayden Sargis and midfielder Mario Penagos who both earned spots in the first team starting eleven for the first time in their young career during a USL Championship regular season game. Both 17-year-old SRFC Academy products signed their first professional contracts with the club in January.
Also debuting in the starting lineup on Saturday night were goalkeeper Adam Grinwis and midfielder Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu, with the former MLS Cup champion finishing the match with a team-high five interceptions.

The match was a physical affair and featured seven yellow cards between the two clubs. Defensively, SRFC held the visitors to just two shots on the entire night.
In the 42nd minute of a feisty first half, defender Hayden Sargis, making his first career USL Championship start, rifled a towering longball to fellow defender Juan Barahona on the left flank. The Salvadoran left back spotted Drew Skundrich at the top of the box and delivered a perfectly placed ball to the midfielder. Skundrich pulled the ball back to his left foot and tucked his shot just inside the bottom corner to lift Sacramento to a 1-0 lead.
Club legend Rodrigo Lopez officially returned to the pitch for Republic FC in the 69th minute when the midfielder entered the match as a substitute for Penagos.

Tulsa equalized in the 79th minute when Lebo Moloto picked out Rodrigo da Costa to level the match at 1-1. The Brazilian playmaker finished the 2019 season in Tulsa as the team leader in both goals (9) and assists (13) and was the only player from a non-playoff team to be named to the 2019 Championship All-League Team.
Defender Ashkanov Apollon, who earned a first team contract after impressing during open tryouts and preseason training camp, made his first career appearance for the boys in Old Glory Red as a second half substitute in the 83rd minute.
Republic FC continued pushing forward creating chances, ten to be exact on the night, but were unable to snag a late winner against a tricky Tulsa team as the Indomitable Club earned their first point in the Western Conference standings of the young Championship campaign.

Republic FC Signs Three Rising Youth Academy Talents to First Team Contracts
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Three rising Republic FC Academy players will continue their path to playing professional soccer by signing USL Academy contracts, making them eligible to join Republic FC’s first team for USL matches. The club’s strong development pipeline continues to generate players for first team competition, as well as produce skilled players to join the U.S. national youth and senior programs. Since 2017, twelve academy standouts have signed USL Academy contracts, including Hayden Sargis and Mario Penagos who signed professional Republic FC contracts earlier this year.

Goalkeeper Diego Ramos, defender Aris Yang and midfielder Julian Chavez will sign USL Academy contracts making them eligible to be included in the club’s 23-man roster for Saturday’s home opener against FC Tulsa, pending league and federation approval. The trio joined the first team for 2020 training camp in preparation for the season, earning valuable minutes against MLS, USL and NISA clubs.
“Our Academy continues to produce quality players and quality human beings, and it is a big credit to Diego, Aris and Julian to have earned these contracts following a very successful six-week preseason with our first team,” Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant said. “We will continue to prioritize and nurture our development pipeline, which we think can be a big advantage for our club now and in the future.”
‘USL Academy’ contracts allow SRFC Academy players the chance to play with the first team in professional matches, while retaining their NCAA eligibility by preserving their amateur status.
Ramos, a 17-year old goalkeeper, has been a part of Republic FC’s development pipeline through the academy since 2018. He signed a USL Academy contract with the Indomitable Club last year, and made appearances against Liga MX side FC Juarez and Club America’s U-20 team. He also earned a spot on the game day 18-man roster for five consecutive USL Championship matches.
Yang, a 17-year old right back, joined Republic FC’s academy in 2016. During his four Academy seasons, Aris logged 81 starts over 104 games. During Republic FC’s 2020 training camp, Aris was inserted into the starting XI against MLS Cup defending champion Seattle Sounders.
Chavez, a 17-year old midfielder has spent five years in the club’s academy and joins the first team following a 2019-2020 academy season netting six goals in only 12 USSDA matches. Since 2016 he has netted 37 career goals in 93 academy appearances.
Last year, Republic FC signed five players to USL Academy contracts, including Ramos. Two of those players, Hayden Sargis and Mario Penagos, have joined the first team rosters on their first full professional contract.
Republic FC kick off the 2020 USL Championship season against FC Tulsa on Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.

What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (0-0-0, 0 pts) look to carry the wave of positive momentum from an action-packed preseason training camp into the 2020 USL Championship regular season campaign that kicks off on Saturday night at home against FC Tulsa.
Mark Briggs’ men have endured a handful of challenging preseason contests and took positive strides in every single one. The club concluded its run of training camp scrimmages with five consecutive wins to close out the preseason — one of which was against a solid MLS San Jose Earthquakes team, 3-1, and another being a come-from-behind 3-2 win against the 2019 defending USL Championship Trophy Winners, Real Monarchs SLC, who fielded several players from Real Salt Lake’s MLS roster.

The results were comforting to see, but not crucial.
In fact, the most pivotal part of training camp was the opportunity for all Republic FC players, academy members included, to earn precious playing time with the first team and accrue beneficial minutes against some of the top domestic clubs. The boys in Old Glory Red had the chance to see how they stacked up against west coast powerhouses like the 2019 MLS Cup Champion Seattle Sounders FC, established MLS-side San Jose, and the reigning USL champs Real Monarchs.
The USL is clearly taking notice of Republic FC’s positive preseason performances, including the league office that listed SRFC 6thin the entire USL Championship power rankings heading into the regular season. The league also recognized goalkeeper Adam Grinwis as one of the top netminders to keep an eye on in 2020.
Along with Grinwis (Orlando City SC) who signed with the Indomitable Club this offseason, new to the team this year are defenders Ashkanov Apollon (SR Colmar) and Tomas Hilliard-Arce (LA Galaxy II), midfielders Rodrigo Lopez (Veracruz) and Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu (Phoenix Rising FC/FC Tucson) and attacking threat Kharlton Belmar (Nashville SC).
Joining the first team this season after signing their first professional contracts are 17-year-old academy standouts midfielder Mario Penagos and defender Hayden Sargis.

What about the other guys?
FC Tulsa (0-0-0, 0 pts) is fresh off a recent rebrand from Tulsa Roughnecks FC after a new ownership group stepped in and purchased the midwestern club.
FC Tulsa enters its sixth season in the league and despite the changes in the front office and club’s color scheme, the team’s top players from last year as well as Head Coach Michael Nsien are returning for a redemption campaign following a 2019 season that saw the Oklahoman club finish 16th in the Western Conference.
Of the many new faces listed on the Tulsa roster, midfielder Lebo Moloto and defender Bradley Bourgeois have both been plucked away from Nashville SC and should both make a positive contribution to the club. Over the last five seasons, Moloto has recorded the fourth-most assists in the entire league (27) while Bourgeois previously played for Tulsa in 2017 where he helped to guide his side to the club’s first and only postseason berth.
But the most notable name on the roster is the return of Rodrigo da Costa. The Brazilian playmaker notched nine goals and 13 assists last season (both team highs) and was the only player from a non-playoff team last year to be named to the 2019 Championship All-League Team.

Head-to-Head
The Indomitable Club has never lost to FC Tulsa and has claimed victory in eight of nine previous contests.

The last time Tulsa visited Sacramento was the largest margin of victory for the Indomitable Club during league play in club history, 6-0. Both Cameron Iwasa and Stefano Bonomo bagged a brace a piece, earning both strikers a spot on the Championship Team of the Week for Week 16.
Last season during SRFC’s heated playoff push, the boys in Old Glory Red visited a tricky Tulsa team that was in the midst of an impressive run that included three wins in their last six matches. But a streaky Tulsa team couldn’t deny Republic FC a massive road win as Sacramento escaped Oklahoma with a 3-2 win.
Republic FC fans will recognize on the opposing bench the familiar face of Nemanja Vukovic who previously played for the Indomitable Club from 2014-2015. The Montenegrin defender made 56 appearances for SRFC and was a member of the 2014 USL Championship-winning team.

“As Republic FC fans look ahead to a bright future and the excitement of our seventh season, this jersey allows us to look back at our heritage, and the journey our fans and club have been on,” said Republic FC President & COO Ben Gumpert. “Everything we build upon together at this club is rooted in our foundation, and this kit is a great way to celebrate that.”
The Old Glory Red sash at the heart of the jersey is drawn directly from the California state flag, the banner of our bear republic. A second sash, reflected in Nike’s energy pattern, is layered over and accents the main sash. UC Davis Health, the club’s partner since its inception, is prominently displayed across the chest. Printed along the inner base of the jersey is Sacramento’s official motto, Urbs Indomita— “Indomitable City”—a reminder to those wearing the kit on and off the pitch of the city’s unyielding spirit and who we represent.

Mark Briggs’ men, who racked up valuable minutes against a slew of quality oppositions this preseason including two quality MLS clubs, didn’t let a strong start from the visitors deny the Indomitable Club a captivating victory.
“I thought you saw two different teams in the first and second half, and it’s a credit to them that we got a reaction,” Republic FC Head Coach Mark Briggs said. “I think in the second half, that showed the team that we are and the team we are going to be. It was pleasing to see there was a reaction at halftime.”
In the 27th minute directly from a dead ball free kick just outside the box, Alvin Jones curled in a right footed effort to give his side an early first half advantage. In 2017 while representing Trinidad and Tobago, Jones scored a famous stunnerto beat former USMNT stalwart Tim Howard and knock the U.S. out of World Cup contention.

Mark Briggs’ men have endured quite a successful training camp thus far, earning victories in three consecutive matches but most importantly, the roster, including Republic FC Academy players, has collected coveted minutes against quality oppositions – including two matches against quality Major League Soccer clubs.
Last week, the boys in Old Glory Red beat two Bay Area teams in just two days. On Friday, SRFC downed MLS-side San Jose Earthquakes in Silicon Valley, 3-1. The very next day, the team earned a 2-1 win over Oakland Roots SC at Cosumnes River College.

A confident Monarchs team visited Phoenix a few weeks later during the postseason and by the same 2-1 scoreline, escaped the southwest with a win and brought Rising FC’s remarkable 2019 campaign to a close in the Western Conference Semifinals. After Olave’s team beat El Paso Locomotive FC in the Western Conference Finals, Monarchs met Louisville City FC in the Cup Final and emerged as 3-1 victors.
Monarchs were a formidable force throughout the 2019 season. The club scored 71 goals on the year, which is tied for the sixth-most goals scored during a single USL season. Monarchs scored six past Orange County during postseason play which was the third-most goals scored by a club in a single playoff game. The 6-2 playoff win for Monarchs over OCSC was the second-most combined goals scored by both clubs (8).

The defending champions have their sights set on another successful campaign and have acquired some quality talent this offseason to do so. Vega, an attacking midfielder, earned a call-up to the Puerto Rico Men’s National Team this past November.
Another new face joining the reigning champs is goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton who joins the club from the University of Hartford where the shot-stopper set a school record for single-season shutouts and was selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team in 2019.
Saturday’s friendly will be streaming live on YouTube and fans attending the match will have the opportunity to meet the team postgame in the Market at the stadium. Republic FC open the 2020 USL Championship regular season at home next Saturday against FC Tulsa. Kickoff at Papa Murphy’s Park is set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
