The result for Mark Briggs’ men means the squad is still in contention for the top spot in Group A and can secure the top spot with two wins in its last two matches, as long as Reno loses its last two remaining fixtures. If 1868 FC collects one point over its last two games, Reno will take first and Sacramento will solidify second place in the group.

SACRAMENTO, California (September 20, 2020) – Republic FC came from behind with a three second half strikes to earn a point at home against Tacoma Defiance following Sunday night’s 3-3 draw at Papa Murphy’s Park on Childhood Cancer Awareness Night presented by UC Davis Health.

Rodrigo Lopez leveled the match late as the playoff-bound boys in Old Glory Red still have yet to lose at home all season. The home fixture saw gold nets decorating the field with eight targets behind the net to help raise funds for research.

The result elevated SRFC’s current unbeaten tally up to nine straight fixtures as Mark Briggs’ men have not been defeated since late July even though the squad was hopeful of securing all three points on Sunday night to keep pace with Reno 1868 FC for the top spot in Group A.

Tacoma took an early lead in the third minute by way of Jesus Perez. 

Republic FC knotted the game at 1-1 when Villyan Bijev – who thought he had scored earlier in the first half before being ruled offside – netted his third goal of the campaign. The visitors took an early lead in the 23rd minute when Jorge Gonzalez hammered a close-range attempt into the back of the net to gift the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

SACRAMENTO, California (August 15, 2020) – The boys in Old Glory Red slammed three first half goals by Tacoma Defiance on Saturday night before the visitors nabbed a consolation strike in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory for Mark Briggs’ men on a scorching night in Sacramento.

Dariusz Formella registered his second career multi-game game against Tacoma after netting twice against Defiance on July 13 and Cameron Iwasa found the back of the net for the 50th time in his USL Championship career. The goal was the Sacramento native’s 48th while wearing an Old Glory Red kit who also made his 100th career start with his hometown club. 

The win was Republic FC’s third in as many matches and third match in an eight-game span. Rafael Diaz was once again manning the net and is now unbeaten in his four fixtures in goal.

Formella found his second in the 41st minute after Kharlton Belmar rifled a towering cross towards the back post that Formella collected with his left before firing his shot with the first touch of his right that lifted his squad to a 3-0 lead before the break. Rafael Diaz made his first start in goal for Republic FC this season and notched his first clean sheet of the 2020 USL Championship campaign and third of his SRFC career during league play. Diaz finished the night with two saves but his diving stop in the 45th minute showcased Diaz’s acrobatics, athleticism, and lightning-quick reflexes to deny Loyal SC a lead before the break. 

Mark Briggs’ men opened the second half with their foot on the gas pedal and almost took the lead five minutes after the break when Kharlton Belmar rifled a dangerous cross into the box that Sam Werner headed just wide. Both Werner and Iwasa finished the night with a team-high three scoring chances created each and the club collected 11 opportunities compared to SD’s four.
