The Indomitable Club returns to the pitch on Wednesday for the first time in 10 days as they travel to ONEOK Field for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff with Tulsa Roughnecks FC. After Sacramento’s bye last week, they sit in fifth place in the Western Conference, looking to make their way back up the ladder.
Before Wednesday’s match, reacquaint yourself with Republic FC’s opponent, Tulsa Roughnecks FC.
KEY PLAYERS
A bright spot for Roughnecks FC this season has been 17-year old Jesus Ferreira. The Colombian striker has taken 19 shots in his 13 appearances, six of which have gone for goals. Ferreira has also connected for 17 key passes including 2 assists and has proven strong accuracy with a 83.2 percent success rate on passes. The young forward–who signed as FC Dallas’s 16th Homegrown Player in 2016–made his MLS debut in 2017, scoring in the 89th minute and became the second youngest player in league history (16 years, 161 days old) to score a goal.
Former Republic FC midfielder, Joaquin Rivas has emerged the attacking leader for Roughnecks FC this season, scoring 10 goals on the year. His 10 conversions double the 26-year-old’s career high from just a year ago, while his passes have met their intended target at a 79.2 percent rate, while recording 29 key passes.
Two other familiar faces for Republic FC will be defender Nemanja Vukovic and midfielder Ivan Mirkovic. Both were members of Republic FC's inaugural championship-winning roster. Vukovic recently scored his first goal with the Roughnecks.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Sacramento last faced Tulsa in late April when the two teams met at Papa Murphy’s Park for a 1-1 draw. Roughnecks FC took the early lead two minutes into the game as a counter-attack by the visitors developed on a misplayed ball in the midfield. Tulsa midfielder Paris Gee ended up with the ball on the right wing before whipping a cross into the box to an unmarked Joaquin Rivas who headed the ball home to open scoring. Sacramento finally found their goal in the final minutes of regulation, as Villyan Bijev slotted a ball to Luis Espino down the left side of the box. Espino’s shot was deflected by a defender but beat Roughnecks’ keeper Fabian Cerda, marking the 20-year-old’s first goal of the season.
2018 SEASON So Far
In the cellar and one of four teams eliminated from playoff contention, Roughnecks FC will aim to spoil the season of potential playoff contenders in their final six games of 2018. It took Tulsa 16 matches to collect their first victory of the season, beating LA Galaxy II at ONEOK Field on June 27 and had to wait until August 11 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC to notch their second. The Roughnecks have struggled mightily this season and are currently tied with Toronto FC II for the fewest wins (3) in 2018. Despite their struggles securing three points in a match, Tulsa has accumulated the second most ties in the Western Conference (11). The Roughnecks also sport the second-worst goal differential in the USL at -31.
Home vs Away splits
While Roughnecks FC have struggled both at home and on the road, all three of the Tulsa team’s wins this season have come at ONEOK Field. Their 3-5-5 record at home has been good for 14 points, while their road record of 0-9-6 has earned Tulsa six additional points.
