In all, more than 8,640 fans voted in the final round of voting for the first annual Subway Goal of the Year. Fans from 23 countries from around the world participated in this year’s voting.
Klimenta’s finish was truly impressive. The defender stepped up to a 25-yard free kick after Los Dos were whistled for a handball. Stepping up to take the free kick, Klimenta sent a curling right-footed strike past a diving Los Dos keeper Clement Diop and into the top right corner of the goal.
The goal won three head-to-head matchups for Klimenta to be crowned the winner for Republic FC’s Subway Goal of the Year, including the final round of voting.
Klimenta’s goal won 67 percent to 33 percent of the votes in the semifinal round against forward Cameron Iwasa’s match-winning goal in Republic FC’s USL Home Opener against Arizona United. In the first round of voting, Klimenta advanced past loan player Tommy Thompson’s goal against Portland Timbers 2 on Aug. 20 77 to 23 percent.
Although Klimenta underwent season-ending ACL surgery in July, the defender had an impressive season, recording two assists and two goals in 14 matches. Through July 2, Klimenta was second on the team in points with six, behind Iwasa, who had 11 at the time. Klimenta was on pace to finish third in league play in points behind Iwasa (27) and Danny Barrera (15).
Klimenta, who is the all-time Republic FC leader in USL minutes and starts, is set to return for his fourth season with the club after originally signing with Republic FC after an open tryout in 2014.
