Republic FC’s newest acquisition, goalkeeper Adam Grinwis, won a USL Championship with Rochester before embarking on his two-year journey in Major League Soccer with Orlando City SC. During his time with Orlando City, Grinwis etched his name in the Floridian club’s folklore forever after a heroic display during the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last season.
Wherever Grinwis has manned the goal, he’s been a positive addition to any club he’s previously represented. Now, the Michigan man is heading to the California capital to compete with Rafael Diaz for the starting spot in net. But before he throws on the goalie gloves for the first time in an Old Glory Red kit, let’s have a look at Republic FC’s newest netminder.

PROVEN WINNER
During his time with the now-defunct Rochester Rhinos, Grinwis lifted the 2015 USL Championship Trophy following a 2-1 win in the final over LA Galaxy II. Rochester did it the hard way after falling behind 1-0 with less than half an hour of play remaining, before an injury time equalizer by the New York club sent the match to extra time where the Rhinos took their first lead of the match in the 113thminute. Less than 10 minutes later, Grinwis was crowned a champion. Prior to playing for the Rhinos, Grinwis spent time with the Michigan Bucks where he won the 2014 USL PDL Championship and was named MVP of the championship match. Lifting trophies at the end of the year isn’t a foreign feeling for the new SRFC goalkeeper.

ACROBATIC
Grinwis has a history of ‘standing on his head’ a handful of times over the course of his career. During his time at the University of Michigan, the former Wolverine made an incredible 12 saves in a single game against Penn State University. During 2019 U.S. Open Cup play, a diving save towards his right post secured Orlando’s spot in the Semifinals with a strong right-handed swat. Confidence is something that Grinwis is far from lacking.

EXPERIENCED
Grinwis made five MLS appearances, recorded 14 saves and collected one clean sheet during his run in the top domestic division. Bringing MLS experience to Republic FC is a massive pick up, but the goalkeeper has also racked up plenty of playing time in other competitive leagues. After a solid career in college, Grinwis played from 2012-2014 for the Michigan Bucks where he made 29 appearances with the most notable being an upset victory over MLS-side Chicago Fire in the U.S. Open Cup. There’s no question Grinwis shines brightest on the biggest stages.

RELIABLE
When called upon, the sure-handed shot stopper has been a reliable last line of defense his entire career. Over the course of his decorated college career, Grinwis was honored as the Michigan Club Man of the Year in 2012 and in 2014, he was selected to the All-Big Ten Second-Team and was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team. He finished his career with the second-most saves in Big Blue history (261) and six shutouts in a single season. Immediately after his college tenure, Grinwis joined the Michigan Bucks and his stellar performances during his first season earned him PDL Goalkeeper of the Year and PDL Rookie of the Year honors in 2012.

FAN FAVORITE
Grinwis was an Open Cup hero during his time with MLS-side Orlando City SC, and fans of the Floridian club will never forget him for it. In the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match at home against New York City FC, Grinny’s pair of pivotal penalty kick saves solidified his sides’ spot in the Semifinals for the first time in franchise history. With the game on the line, he put the team on his back when they needed him most and he rose to the occasion.
