As has become a yearly tradition for the club’s support of education in the Greater Sacramento Region, Republic FC will spotlight teachers and educators alike at halftime of Saturday’s match with San Diego Loyal SC at Heart Health Park.
Mandy Garner and Yvonne Thornton were named this year’s recipients of the award by the Sacramento County Office of Education. Garner is an agriculture teacher at Liberty Ranch High School in the Galt Joint Union High School District, while Thornton teaches chemistry, math and study skills at Cordova High School in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District. 13 additional educators were nominated for the award and will be recognized as well at halftime of Saturday’s match, in addition to four Classified School Employees for their outstanding work in and out of the classroom.
“We’re extremely proud of our continued representation and support of education in the Greater Sacramento Region,” said Kevin Burdick, Republic FC’s Community Investment Manager. “As a club with deep ties to the Sacramento community, we deeply appreciate our educators and the impact they make on the younger generation – especially in the midst of a pandemic – and we couldn’t be happier to recognize these local role models on a consistent basis.”
Just one week removed from Arlington Heights Elementary School teacher Tyler Long being named Republic FC’s weekly Rockstar, the Indomitable Club will uplift and give a platform to teachers and educators alike – the same way those very teachers and educators do so for their students on a daily basis.
The relationship with the education community goes even deeper for SRFC. This past summer, Republic FC defender Duke Lacroix visited nine schools in the Natomas area and teamed up with the Natomas Unified School District and the Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center, where he and SRFC Youth Coaches put on soccer clinics for 130 kids. Lacroix spent his time speaking on his soccer experience, sharing his skills with the kids, and enjoying another opportunity to strengthen the club’s connection to educational community.
Virtual education has curbed the learning process for kids in an educational setting throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but with in-person learning coming back into the realm, Lacroix’s visit and his role as a community ambassador and role model for the younger generation – as he described it – “is really special and something hopefully the kids won’t forget.”
In the trenches of the pandemic last spring, Republic FC once again stepped up and stepped forward for its education community. Thanks to an assist from Smile Generation, the Boys in Old Glory Red were able to bridge the virtual learning gap with to bridge the gap that virtual learning had created for so many kids. With the assist from Smile Generation, the Boys in Old Glory Red crashed Zoom classes for schoolkids in the Greater Sacramento Region.
In such a changing world, local educators remained Indomitable. They never wavered from their pursuit of inspiring and shaping the next generation, even in the toughest of times. And Saturday night at Heart Health Park, the Indomitable Club will recognize its Indomitable educators.
