Earlier today, the USL Championship nominated Republic FC forward Kyle Edwards for Week 30 Goal of the Week. The fan vote is open now through Wednesday, September 30 at 9:00 p.m. PT at USLChampionship.com.
Just five minutes after New Mexico cut Republic FC’s lead in half, Edwards responded with a stellar strike to once again give his team the two-goal advantage. The play began as Memo Rodriguez won possession in Republic FC’s defensive third and sent a long ball forward for Edwards who outran two defenders and fired off an outside-of-the-foot shot past goalkeeper Kris Shakes.
Not only did the goal prove to be the game-winner in the 3-2 contest, but it also cemented Edwards’ place in the USL Championship record book. The veteran forward is now holds the league’s all-time record with 19 career regular season goals as a substitute.
Saturday’s win pushed Republic FC three spots up in the table. The Indomitable Club now sits in fourth place in the Western Conference with just a few weeks remaining in the regular season.
