The boys in Old Glory Red have collected five straight victories and a midweek win against Orange County SC tonight would match the club’s longest winning streak during regular season play – a feat that hasn’t been matched since the club’s inaugural season in 2014.
Most recently, Republic FC downed Portland Timbers 2 2-1 in dramatic fashion after Julian Chavez netted his first career goal with the first team with the last kick of the match. Mario Penagos scored his first career goal during USL Championship play in the 87th minute before the hosts leveled shortly after the 90th minute. But JuJu’s left-footed shot that found the back of the net sealed the win and all three points for Sacramento as Mark Briggs’ men continue to push for the top spot in Group A.
Before OCSC visits Papa Murphy’s Park on Wednesday for the first and only meeting of the two in-state rivals this season, it’s time to have a look at what the boss and the skipper had to say before taking the pitch and pushing for a sixth straight win.

On the team’s current winning form…
“We’re just preparing on tomorrow’s game and not looking too far ahead. We’re focusing on continuing with our form, keep trying to improve and perform for a little longer. But we’re in a good spot, we just need to keep that momentum going.”
On what’s been the driving force behind the current win streak…
“If you look at the season, we’ve been going for about eight weeks now. It takes time for things to gel, for things to click, and we haven’t fully clicked but we’re headed in the direction we want to go, which is up. Now t’s about improving on what we’ve done so far and putting in a solid performance against a really good Orange County team.”
On what the team is still trying to improve on heading into the tail end of the season…
“I think it’s about doing all the little things right. We can improve defensively; we can improve in possession of the ball. As a whole, it’s about continuing to develop our style and our identity and implementing certain things to be successful against the opposition.”

On collecting a third straight win against T2 and seeing the young guys play the role of hero ….
“In the moment, you’re so happy for your team, for them – Mario and JuJu – they played incredible. Their impact was amazing in the game. But we don’t want to get too high in those moments. After the game it’s always good to reflect on how we did and how we could have done better to manage the game and close it out.”
On his first career goal and what that means to a young player…
“I remember my first professional goal – it was with Bethlehem Steel in a 4-1 win so in that sense it wasn’t a game winner like Mario thought he had, then JuJu did. So, it wasn’t the same caliber, but it was still a first professional goal and for me, it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders because once that stat happens, you don’t feel any pressure to score. But for them, their confidence is super high right now which is very helpful because if you’re confident, that will lead to you playing freely and helping out this team as best they can.”
On the team’s confidence level during the current five game win streak…
“We know we’re not at our peak yet. We’re still growing as a team, as a unit, so we need to keep building that up through our performances. Yes, we have five wins in a row but we’re not playing our best, but it says something about our team to get those results while we’re not playing our best. For us, it’s a confidence thing, we know we’re good enough to get these results and we know we can be so much better in the future.”
