Republic FC to Salute Community Champions With Kevin Nagle Indomitable Spirit Award
Sacramento, Calif.– Today, Sacramento Republic FC announced a new community award recognizing the indomitable spirit of leaders throughout the region. The Inaugural Kevin Nagle Indomitable Spirit Award will be spotlighted at Republic FC home games, recognizing the accomplishments of community leaders, advocates, and coaches who strive to make Sacramento a better place to live, work, and play.

Created to honor Kevin Nagle’s contributions to Sacramento and the region beyond – from his relentless pursuit to elevate Republic FC to Major League Soccer and his charitable contributions to non-profits supporting health, wellness, and more.
“It is truly humbling to have the team and staff who create such a profound impact on the city, present an award to community leaders that acknowledges my passion for this region,” said Sacramento Republic FC investor Kevin Nagle. “I’m honored to be included as part of the club’s celebration of the people committed to making Sacramento a better place for all.”
Kevin’s contributions to the region have forever changed the future for this community,” said Republic FC President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Gumpert. “The Indomitable Spirit award will honor fellow champions like Kevin, working to lift up every neighborhood.”
The first recipient of the Kevin Nagle Indomitable Spirit Award will be Phil Oates, chairman of the board for Buzz Oates. He embodies the indomitable spirit by supporting countless non-profits in the region, and championing youth development through sports. Republic FC will honor Phil and Kevin during halftime of the 2020 season opener, March 7 when the team hosts FC Tulsa. Native Sacramentan and Top-10 finalist from season 17 of NBC’s The Voice, Shane Q will perform the national anthem and fans will be welcomed on the pitch for a post-game fireworks show. Tickets for the club’s seventh home opener are available at www.sacrepublicfc.com/Tickets.
Through the season, the club is encouraging its fans to share the names and stories of people in their community who make a difference, stand for equality and fair play, as well as represent the Indomitable Spirit of the region. What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (0-0-0, 0 pts) look to carry the wave of positive momentum from an action-packed preseason training camp into the 2020 USL Championship regular season campaign that kicks off on Saturday night at home against FC Tulsa.
Mark Briggs’ men have endured a handful of challenging preseason contests and took positive strides in every single one. The club concluded its run of training camp scrimmages with five consecutive wins to close out the preseason — one of which was against a solid MLS San Jose Earthquakes team, 3-1, and another being a come-from-behind 3-2 win against the 2019 defending USL Championship Trophy Winners, Real Monarchs SLC, who fielded several players from Real Salt Lake’s MLS roster.

The results were comforting to see, but not crucial.
In fact, the most pivotal part of training camp was the opportunity for all Republic FC players, academy members included, to earn precious playing time with the first team and accrue beneficial minutes against some of the top domestic clubs. The boys in Old Glory Red had the chance to see how they stacked up against west coast powerhouses like the 2019 MLS Cup Champion Seattle Sounders FC, established MLS-side San Jose, and the reigning USL champs Real Monarchs.
The USL is clearly taking notice of Republic FC’s positive preseason performances, including the league office that listed SRFC 6thin the entire USL Championship power rankings heading into the regular season. The league also recognized goalkeeper Adam Grinwis as one of the top netminders to keep an eye on in 2020.
Along with Grinwis (Orlando City SC) who signed with the Indomitable Club this offseason, new to the team this year are defenders Ashkanov Apollon (SR Colmar) and Tomas Hilliard-Arce (LA Galaxy II), midfielders Rodrigo Lopez (Veracruz) and Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu (Phoenix Rising FC/FC Tucson) and attacking threat Kharlton Belmar (Nashville SC).
Joining the first team this season after signing their first professional contracts are 17-year-old academy standouts midfielder Mario Penagos and defender Hayden Sargis.

What about the other guys?
FC Tulsa (0-0-0, 0 pts) is fresh off a recent rebrand from Tulsa Roughnecks FC after a new ownership group stepped in and purchased the midwestern club.
FC Tulsa enters its sixth season in the league and despite the changes in the front office and club’s color scheme, the team’s top players from last year as well as Head Coach Michael Nsien are returning for a redemption campaign following a 2019 season that saw the Oklahoman club finish 16th in the Western Conference.
Of the many new faces listed on the Tulsa roster, midfielder Lebo Moloto and defender Bradley Bourgeois have both been plucked away from Nashville SC and should both make a positive contribution to the club. Over the last five seasons, Moloto has recorded the fourth-most assists in the entire league (27) while Bourgeois previously played for Tulsa in 2017 where he helped to guide his side to the club’s first and only postseason berth.
But the most notable name on the roster is the return of Rodrigo da Costa. The Brazilian playmaker notched nine goals and 13 assists last season (both team highs) and was the only player from a non-playoff team last year to be named to the 2019 Championship All-League Team.

The Indomitable Club has never lost to FC Tulsa and has claimed victory in eight of nine previous contests.

The Indomitable Club has never lost to FC Tulsa and has claimed victory in eight of nine previous contests.

The last time Tulsa visited Sacramento was the largest margin of victory for the Indomitable Club during league play in club history, 6-0. Both Cameron Iwasa and Stefano Bonomo bagged a brace a piece, earning both strikers a spot on the Championship Team of the Week for Week 16.
Last season during SRFC’s heated playoff push, the boys in Old Glory Red visited a tricky Tulsa team that was in the midst of an impressive run that included three wins in their last six matches. But a streaky Tulsa team couldn’t deny Republic FC a massive road win as Sacramento escaped Oklahoma with a 3-2 win.
Republic FC fans will recognize on the opposing bench the familiar face of Nemanja Vukovic who previously played for the Indomitable Club from 2014-2015. The Montenegrin defender made 56 appearances for SRFC and was a member of the 2014 USL Championship-winning team.

RECAP: Sacramento Republic FC 3-2 Real Monarchs
SACRAMENTO, California (February 29, 2020)– Republic FC’s solid preseason form continued on Saturday night against the defending league champions at Papa Murphy’s Park.
Against a stacked Real Monarchs starting eleven that fielded seven players listed on Real Salt Lakes’ Major League Soccer roster, the boys in Old Glory Red stormed back from a two-goal deficit to earn a dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 win against the 2019 USL Championship Trophy Winners.

Mark Briggs’ men, who racked up valuable minutes against a slew of quality oppositions this preseason including two quality MLS clubs, didn’t let a strong start from the visitors deny the Indomitable Club a captivating victory.
“I thought you saw two different teams in the first and second half, and it’s a credit to them that we got a reaction,” Republic FC Head Coach Mark Briggs said. “I think in the second half, that showed the team that we are and the team we are going to be. It was pleasing to see there was a reaction at halftime.”
In the 27th minute directly from a dead ball free kick just outside the box, Alvin Jones curled in a right footed effort to give his side an early first half advantage. In 2017 while representing Trinidad and Tobago, Jones scored a famous stunnerto beat former USMNT stalwart Tim Howard and knock the U.S. out of World Cup contention.

Three minute later, Christopher Garcia doubled the visitors’ lead when the forward tucked a close-range effort into the far corner.
The second half opened with a scorching start from Republic FC as Kharlton Belmar, who entered the match just seconds before, scored his second goal in as many weeks with the Indomitable Club in the 46th minute. Winger Villyan Bijev whipped in a dangerous cross that found Belmar directly in front of net. The 2015 USL Rookie of the Year buried his shot from point blankto cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Republic FC equalized in the 73rd minute when midfielder Mario Penagos, who entered the game just two minutes prior, delivered a stellar ball through the heart of the visiting defense directly to Bijev. The Bulgarian-born playmaker rifled a curling effort from just outside the box into the far corner to level the match at 2-2.

Mark Briggs’ men have endured quite a successful training camp thus far, earning victories in three consecutive matches but most importantly, the roster, including Republic FC Academy players, has collected coveted minutes against quality oppositions – including two matches against quality Major League Soccer clubs.
Last week, the boys in Old Glory Red beat two Bay Area teams in just two days. On Friday, SRFC downed MLS-side San Jose Earthquakes in Silicon Valley, 3-1. The very next day, the team earned a 2-1 win over Oakland Roots SC at Cosumnes River College.

Real Monarchs finished the 2019 regular season in fourth place in the Western Conference and momentum carried the club to the USL Championship final.
During the tail end of the regular season, Monarchs pulled of the colossal upset when the team traveled to Phoenix during Rising FC’s seemingly unstoppable home game winning streak and Jamison Olave’s side shocked the record-shattering club in Arizona, 2-1.

A confident Monarchs team visited Phoenix a few weeks later during the postseason and by the same 2-1 scoreline, escaped the southwest with a win and brought Rising FC’s remarkable 2019 campaign to a close in the Western Conference Semifinals. After Olave’s team beat El Paso Locomotive FC in the Western Conference Finals, Monarchs met Louisville City FC in the Cup Final and emerged as 3-1 victors.
Monarchs were a formidable force throughout the 2019 season. The club scored 71 goals on the year, which is tied for the sixth-most goals scored during a single USL season. Monarchs scored six past Orange County during postseason play which was the third-most goals scored by a club in a single playoff game. The 6-2 playoff win for Monarchs over OCSC was the second-most combined goals scored by both clubs (8).

One notable name is 21-year-old Devin Vega who plied his trade in Phoenix during the 2018 season. Vega, an attacking midfielder, earned a call-up to the Puerto Rico Men’s National Team this past November.
Another new face joining the reigning champs is goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton who joins the club from the University of Hartford where the shot-stopper set a school record for single-season shutouts and was selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team in 2019.
Saturday’s friendly will be streaming live on YouTube and fans attending the match will have the opportunity to meet the team postgame in the Market at the stadium. Meet the New Glory Fan Can Artist Dustin Avilla
On Wednesday, Republic FC announced Dustin Avilla as the winner of the 2020 Fan Can design collaboration between the Indomitable Club and New Glory Craft Brewery.
Avilla, a Sacramento State graduate and local graphic designer, created the design for the Ubahdank IPA can to be sold at both the New Glory brewery and all SRFC home games during 2020. Unless the brew sells out completely, just like it did in 2019.
The artist, who grew up in Napa but currently resides in Natomas, took signature elements from the brewery and the club and created something uniquely Sacramento. The can design captures the key ingredients of the club’s crest – the star, the bear – as well as the quintessential mosaic hops that give life to the Ubahdank IPA itself. The swirling soccer ball, vibrant shade of Old Glory Red and the roar of the bear perfectly embody the passion that can be experienced at matches as well as the passion that went into making the beer.
Before the brew finds its way into the hands of thirsty fans this season, let’s get to know a little more about the artist behind the remarkable design…

Can you talk a little bit about your art background?
“I’m currently a freelance graphic designer. I went to the Sac State and graduated from their design program in 2011, so I’ve been doing graphic design for a while now. Once I graduated, I moved to New York. I lived in NY for four years and while I was there, I worked for the SYFY channel, so I got to work on some really interesting projects there. I worked on a lot of custom press kits for when a new TV show comes out so it was my job to find a way to send out the pilot episodes so we would create a really cool and unique custom package and that’s how I really got into the niche of print design and packaging. I’ve been doing design for about 10 years now.”
When did you first find your passion for art?
“At a pretty young age. I used to always draw when I was little, I would collect comic books like Spiderman, X-Men, and I started out trying to draw the characters like Spiderman. I always tried to draw him. In high school, I took some drawing classes and some art classes and I took that all the way through college. I didn’t really know what graphic design was at the time but once I quit football graphic designed seemed really intriguing so I learned more about it and kind of just fell in love with it.”
What brought you to Sacramento?
“I grew up in Napa and I played football and was recruited by Sac State. I played there for a year and then ended up getting up injured so I kind of had to find a new passion and art was always something that I was interested in. That was how I found the graphic design major after football. After working in New York, I moved back to Sacramento where I’m still doing graphic design today.”
When you first heard about the contest, what was your initial thought?
“I’ve seen a few concepts like this that I wanted to do, so when I saw the Sac Republic and New Glory contest pop up, I was already in that mode and was excited. I’ve always known about Sac Republic and I’ve been to several games and with so much excitement around a new stadium and MLS future, I thought this was a great opportunity to be a part of it. It’s amazing to see New Glory and Sac Republic and the art community all come together to collaborate on this one piece.”
What was your inspiration for the can?
“I aimed to merge signature brand elements from both Sac Republic and New Glory in a way that created excitement and captured the club’s indomitable spirit. For New Glory, I incorporated the use of pattern and a repetition of the hops graphic – something that’s very signature to the original Ubahdank artwork. Then pulling in the elements from Sac Republic – the bear front and center, the star from the crest, and a flying soccer ball to emphasize a sense of movement and energy throughout the design. I wanted it to have that art-feel to the label, so I went with a traditional tattoo style and that was inspired by Northern California. I feel like that’s the style that really lends itself to the stars and just trying to capture that art community as a whole.”
What was the first impression when the judging group saw it?
“They were pretty stoked about it. They said this is exactly what a collaboration between Sac Republic and us would look like. They thought I really nailed merging the two styles into one.”
How are you feeling waiting to see the finished product?
“I’m excited to see it. I’ve been working with New Glory refining it, making small tweaks here and there but I’m really excited to see it out in the wild.”

RECAP: Sacramento Republic FC 2 – 1 Oakland Roots SC
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (February 22, 2020) — Republic FC returned home on Saturday for their last closed-door match of preseason, taking a 2-1 win and logging another valuable 90 minutes against a tough Oakland Roots side.
Head Coach Mark Briggs’ squad put up a fight to maintain the lead through full-time in a tight encounter with the Roots.
“[Preseason] is about implementing my philosophy and style and the things that I want and ask of each individual, and that takes time, it's a process but we're building step-by-step and slowly you can see those pieces coming together.”

With many players suiting up against the Quakes yesterday and another strong opponent today, Briggs rotated the squad with a mix of experienced veterans, Academy players and also gave opportunities to three trialists.
In the 27th minute, trialist and forward Adam Mickelson gave the Indomitable Club the lead, after working his way into the box and neatly slotting away his shot.

Oakland nearly tied it before halftime, forcing a great save by Ramos, as the keeper slid his body in the way of Oakland’s shot and kept the clean sheet going into the break.
Early in the second half, Oakland got their goal with a spectacular effort from the edge of the box, tying the match 1-1.
Late in the half, the boys in white would find the eventual winner, as Julian Chavez was brought down in the box and the ref pointed to the penalty spot. Forward Kharlton Belmar stepped up, and coolly slotted his shot to give the hosts the lead and the win.
Results aside, the learning experience and minutes provided for players is the real takeaway from the matches.
“We've played Seattle, the MLS champions and we got a lot out of that and we played San Jose and we've got a lot out of that, and it was another good game against Oakland today,” said Coach Briggs. “It's three competitive games, and then we’ll go against the Monarchs next weekend. We get to see what our players will look like when we're under pressure against teams in league action.”
