U-19s

The Republic FC U-18/19s returned to action on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to De Anza Force U-18/19s. The Indomitable Club were on a bye last week after competing in two matches the previous weekend against Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders. The U-19s split the series by following up a 4-1 loss to Seattle with a 4-0 win over Portland. The boys in Old Glory Red will try to bounce back against Vancouver Whitecaps U-18/19s this Saturday at the National Soccer Development Centre.

After surrendering an early pair of strikes, Sacramento stormed back with goals from Talan Rochelle and Yair Del Toro to level the match at two-a-piece. The U-14s are now unbeaten in their last three games and will look to keep momentum going on November 23 against Silicon Valley Soccer Academy.

Children laughed and music echoed up and down 37th Avenue on Thursday afternoon as an entire community celebrated the unveiling of the first public futsal courts in Sacramento.

A previously desolate and abandoned tennis court surface, directly across the street from the once-shuttered Maple Elementary School, was brought back to life by Bank of America and Republic FC as a gift to the neighborhood. 

However, none of it would have been possible without the support of Councilmember Jay Schenirer, the Sacramento City Unified School District, and the La Familia Counseling Center.

“We’re beyond excited to help support this and really enliven the community, and introduce some kids to futsal who have never played before,” said Bank of America Business and Community Engagement SVP Lori Rianda.

“This day is an important day for Sacramento, for the neighborhood, and the kids. We’re seeing these kids out here having a great time, on a property they haven’t been able to play on in years.”

The playing surface, once covered in weeds, now covered in a striking shade of Old Glory Red asphalt, has transformed from two blistered and unused tennis courts into a pair of pristine futsal courts available for free to the public. Just like the school across the street, which too has transformed and blossomed into the Maple Neighborhood Center where La Familia runs programs out of, the community is starting to get the love and attention it deserves. 

Especially for the kids. 

“Our neighborhood really needs a good hug,” mental health administrator for La Familia Counseling Center Dr. Cesar Castaneda said. “It was a really special day to be able to bring soccer here to our neighborhood.”

“In this area, we have a lot of kids who now can play such great healthy activities and when the kids are healthy, we get to work with their mental, emotional and social health. And this is a great complement.”

 

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, a handful of youngsters who spend time at the Maple Neighborhood Center had the privilege of testing out the brand new courts with a mini-camp as part of a partnership with La Familia and SRFC. Even former MLS defender and current Republic FC general manager Todd Dunivant couldn’t resist getting in on the action. 

“The new courts make it so inviting to play, and the kids were having a blast out there” Dunivant said. “We may have seen our next academy stars on display!”

The futsal courts themselves, available to all ages, were revitalized with the intention of bringing healthy, safe places to play and gather. Both courts have lighting for evening action and are located directly across the street from the Maple Neighborhood Center at 3301 37th Avenue. 

Futsal is a fast-paced, small-sided (typically five vs. five) version of soccer on a basketball-sized court and played with smaller soccer balls. The game emphasis quick-thinking, precision passing and sharp technical skills, similarly to that of the world’s beautiful game.

The 2019 campaign was a solid one for the club captain and once the final month of the regular season hit, Cameron Iwasa kicked it up a notch. The Sacramento native scored the game-winner on the road against Tulsa Roughnecks to help his side escape the Lone Star State with a 3-2 win on Oct. 5. The club’s all-time leading goal-scorer followed up his performance in Texas one week later with a brace against Orange County SC. Iwasa also scored the eventual winner during Republic FC’s 3-1 Western Conference Quarterfinal upset over No. 2 seed Reno 1868 FC in Nevada. His three goals during the month of October was tied for a team-best alongside fellow striker Thomas Enevoldsen.

It should be of no surprise that Jaime Villarreal was the team-leader in minutes played this season (2,820) and appearances (36). And when the going got tough during the final stretch of the season, a tough Villarreal got going and played 518 of a possible 540 minutes during the month of October. His precision passing was crucial during the Indomitable Club’s playoff push, as Villarreal had at least a 78% passing completion percentage in five of six October matchups. He also wasn’t afraid to do some of the dirty work, as he finished the month with 11 tackles.

But that wasn’t all for October, as Enevoldsen lead the team in shots (19) and shots on target (9). The Great Dane opened the month with at least one goal or assist in three straight games. Enevoldsen scored in Republic FC’s 2-2 draw to LA Galaxy II then snagged his second goal in as many games when he netted against Tulsa. He followed up his two goals in two games performances with an assist against OCSC. In six matches during October, Enevoldsen averaged 1.83 chances created per game.

Sacramento, Calif. – On Thursday, November 7, Sacramento Republic FC, dedicated its first community futsal court project in the greater Sacramento region, constructed to inspire the next generation to focus on health through sports, create connected communities through teamwork, and provide safe, fun spaces to gather.

With the support of Councilmember Jay Schenirer, the Sacramento City Unified School District, and the La Familia Counseling Center, Republic FC and Bank of America revitalized two unused tennis courts and created a new space for athletes, young and old, to practice their favorite game, as well as encourage healthy competition with neighbors and friends.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Bank of America and encourage more play in neighborhoods around Sacramento,” said Republic FC President Ben Gumpert. “These courts will provide a new home for people of all ages to come together around the beautiful game – as well as bring a focus on health, fun, and community pride.”

Republic FC and Bank of America partnered to revive the courts with fresh asphalt, permanent soccer goals, and a coat of Old Glory Red paint. The Maple Park Futsal Courts are ready for the public to use for free. Futsal is a fast-paced, small-sided (typically five vs. five) version of soccer. Played on indoor and outdoor courts with a smaller soccer ball, and without walls – unlike indoor soccer, gameplay features a focus on sharp technical skills, quick thinking and pace, and the same camaraderie found on pitches across the world.

 “To partner with a community-focused group like Sacramento Republic FC and to support initiatives that inspire play was a no-brainer,” said Bank of America Market President Matt McCormack. “These courts are more than just a place to play futsal. They’re opportunities for our youth to stay healthy, socialize and have fun exercising outdoors. This is just the beginning of a growing partnership between Bank of America and SRFC as well as the city of Sacramento and soccer’s bright future in Sacramento.”

The new futsal courts sit across from the Maple Neighborhood Center, a once-shuttered school site, reactivated initially by three nonprofits who use the site to extend and improve their programming. In partnership with Republic FC, La Familia Community opened play on the court with a special mini-camp for youth who spend time at the Maple Neighborhood Center. The club also plans to host future events including tournaments, community clinics and more.

“I am so excited to turn this blighted and unused space into a community asset – which the neighborhood sorely needs,” said Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer. “Instead of a court of overgrown weeds, we can grow our future MLS stars.” 

From the professional pitch to public parks and beyond, the club’s core mission is to make California’s Capital Region into the most inspiring, energetic and rewarding place to live, work and play through the beautiful game.

The final match of the weekend was a 1-0 win for the U-14s with Angad Singh netting the game-winner in the first half to seal the victory. The Republic FC U-18/19s opened their weekend doubleheader with a 4-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC U-18/19s. The lone goal of the match for SRFC was netted by Nathaniel Carrasco, the third consecutive game Carrasco has found the back of the net. The following day, SRFC cruised by Portland Timbers U-18/19s 4-0 with goals from Daniel Cervantes, Sebastian Castillo, Oscar Cardenas and Cole Barrett. The Indomitable Club will look to make it back-to-back wins when the U-19s travel to De Anza Force on November 9.

The Indomitable Club came-from-behind to beat Seattle Sounders U-15s on Saturday, 2-1, with Aidan Vangelatos bagging a brace to seal the victory for the hosts. The very next day, Vangelatos snagged his third goal in two games and Lucas Liu added a hat trick to propel the boys in Old Glory Red to a 4-2 win over Portland Timbers. The U-15s will look to keep their winning streak alive when they host Breakers FC U-15s this Saturday.

The Indomitable Club’s U-14s played to a 1-1 draw with Mustang Soccer Club over the weekend. Isaac Emojong lifted Republic FC to an early lead before the opposition leveled just two minutes later. The U-14s will have plenty of opportunities to return to winning ways this weekend when the Academy plays Total Futbol Academy, LAFC, Strikers FC and Portland Timbers at OC Great Park Soccer Complex over a two-day span.

U-13s

The Republic FC U-13s fought hard but fell to Mustang Soccer Club over the weekend, 4-3. Veer Joshi bagged a brace while Samuel Morrison also made the scoresheet by beating the Mustang SC goalkeeper. It’s been an impressive campaign for the U-13s this season and the youngsters will look to return to winning ways in Orange County next weekend against four different oppositions over the course of two days.

U-19s

The Republic FC U-18/19s opened their weekend doubleheader with a 4-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC U-18/19s. The lone goal of the match for SRFC was netted by Nathaniel Carrasco, the third consecutive game Carrasco has found the back of the net. The following day, SRFC cruised by Portland Timbers U-18/19s 4-0 with goals from Daniel Cervantes, Sebastian Castillo, Oscar Cardenas and Cole Barrett. The Indomitable Club will look to make it back-to-back wins when the U-19s travel to De Anza Force on November 9.

The Indomitable Club’s U-16/17s were downed 3-0 by Seattle Sounders U-16/17s over the weekend at Cosumnes River College. The next day, the youngsters fell 6-2 to Portland Timbers with Nathan Jimenez and Alex Medina finding the back of the net. The U-17s will be gunning for their first win of the season when the Academy travels to De Anza Force next Saturday.

The Republic FC U-15s picked up a pair of wins over the weekend at Cosumnes River College. The Indomitable Club came-from-behind to beat Seattle Sounders U-15s on Saturday, 2-1, with Aidan Vangelatos bagging a brace to seal the victory for the hosts. The very next day, Vangelatos snagged his third goal in two games and Lucas Liu added a hat trick to propel the boys in Old Glory Red to a 4-2 win over Portland Timbers. The U-15s will look to keep their winning streak alive when they host Breakers FC U-15s this Saturday.
