RECAP: Sacramento Republic FC 2-3 Orange County SC
Sacramento, Calif. (October 12, 2019) — Playoff-bound Republic FC lost to Orange County SC 3-2 Saturday night at Papa Murphy’s Park but despite the loss, the club can still potentially host at least one more match at home this season.
Sacramento, Calif. (October 12, 2019) — Playoff-bound Republic FC lost to Orange County SC 3-2 Saturday night at Papa Murphy’s Park but despite the loss, the club can still potentially host at least one more match at home this season.
Following the result, the Indomitable Club currently sits in sixth place with 48 points from 33 games played. If the season were to end today, the sixth place team would have to travel to the club in possession of third place, currently held by Fresno. But with one match remaining, SRFC could end up as high as fifth place or as low as eighth, with seventh and eighth place being the two seeds who would host a play-in round on Oct. 23. Either way, the boys in Old Glory Red are still headed to the postseason.
Simon Elliott’s men took the early lead in the sixth minute when Thomas Enevoldsen weaved a perfect through ball to Cameron Iwasa in space. The Sacramento native collected himself and danced around the goalkeeper before firing his shot into an empty net to give Republic FC the 1-0 advantage.
Orange County equalized ten minutes later when forward Darwin Jones bagged his 12th goal of the season. Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth made a terrific diving save to prevent a Walker Hume header from finding the back of the net but the save fell straight to Jones who tapped his first touch home.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 26th minute when a Vinicius header off a Michael Orozco cross gave OCFC the 2-1 advantage. Orozco blindly rifled the ball over his shoulder and into the middle of the box. Vinicius was in the right place at the right time and nodded his shot into the far corner.
But the boys in Old Glory Red weren’t finished yet. Midfielder Sam Werner tried a one-timer from just inside the box which bounced its way towards goal before Enevoldsen attempted to get a touch on it. The dummy touch threw off the visiting goalkeeper and allowed the ball to slip through his grasp. Iwasa, barreling into the box, slammed his shot from point blank into the back of the net to tie the match at two a piece. The goal was Iwasa’s 16th strike in league play this season.
Republic FC thought they took the lead off a free kick with about a quarter hour left to play before the referee called the goal back for offside.
Moments later, it was the visitors who captured the lead off a corner kick. The cross met Aodhan Quinn in the middle of the box whose header fell directly to Orozco in front of net. The forward’s shot from close range was ultimately the difference in the match.
Before the boys in Old Glory Red begin their 2019 USL playoff campaign, one final regular season game awaits them in Utah against Real Monarchs on Saturday, October 19.

RECAP: Republic FC 3-4 FC Juarez
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (October 9, 2019) — A free kick from outside the box in the dying moments for FC Juarez was ultimately the deciding factor on Wednesday night at Papa Murphy’s Park after a resilient Republic FC team, consisting mostly of academy players, fought back from a goal down to level the match on three separate occasions before the late strike gave the visitors a 4-3 win.

FC Juarez jumped out to an early lead in the 14th minute by way of a Leandro Carrijo goal. The visitors easily could have taken a 2-0 lead within the first quarter hour of play but an impressive diving save from Rafael Diaz kept the boys in Old Glory Red firmly in the match.
Simon Elliott’s men equalized in the 34th minute when Stefano Bonomo tucked a right-footed effort inside the near post to level the score 1-1. Midfielder Hayden Partain, who was credited with an assist on the goal, drove a perfectly weighted through ball to the SRFC forward who simply could not have placed his shot any better.
But the visitors were quick to respond and regained the lead two minutes later when Eduardo Perez fired one by the Republic FC goalkeeper in the 36th minute.
Five minutes into the second half, Bonomo snagged his second score of the match with a perfectly placed header. Academy defender Aris Yang spotted Bonomo at the far post and delivered a towering cross. Bonomo nodded the ball towards the back post which bounced off the woodwork and past the Juarez goalkeeper Ivan Vazquez to level the score 2-2.
The feisty Mexican club took their third lead of the match in the 54th minute when Leandro Carrijo scored his second goal of the game.
But the Indomitable Club battled back once again and found their well-deserved equalizer in the 58th minute. Initially, a long-distance effort crushed the Juarez crossbar before academy forward Nate Carrasco followed up the rebound by slamming his shot by the Juarez goalkeeper to make it 3-3.
FC Juarez found their fourth and final goal after the referee awarded a free kick to the visitors just outside the SRFC box in extra time. Ivan Vazquez came all the way up from his goal and delivered a dipping shot that kissed the crossbar before finding the back of the net.

USL Championship Team of the Week – Week 31

Three Takeaways from #TULvSAC
On Saturday, the boys in Old Glory Red triumphed over Roughnecks FC, 3-2, and climbed back into the top four of the Western Conference. The business trip for Simon Elliott’s men was a very successful one that yielded plenty of positives to reflect on prior to the final stretch of the regular season.
1. Republic FC is untouchable in Tulsa.
It’s becoming a common theme that Republic FC is simply unbeatable in Tulsa. Over the last few seasons, not once has Sacramento returned home without all three points against Roughnecks FC. Saturday’s win marked the fifth time in five trips that the boys in Old Glory Red have handed Tulsa a loss on their home turf.
In the all-time series in the Sooner State, the Indomitable Club has outscored Roughnecks FC 16 to 5 and 29 to 9 in the all-time overall series. This season alone across both legs, Republic FC netted nine times compared to Tulsa’s two.

2. Enevoldsen extends his scoring streak to three straight.
Since his arrival from Indy Eleven, Thomas Enevoldsen has put on an absolute clinic. Over the last seven matches, the Danish striker has six goals and three assists to his name and has found the back of the net in each of the last three games. Over the recent seven match stretch, Enevoldsen has racked up team-best 30 total shots and 19 shots on target.
Since joining the Indomitable Club in August, SRFC is 5-3-2 with Enevoldsen in the lineup. On the season with Republic FC, the 32-year-old forward has eight goals and three assists in 10 games.

3. Sacramento can still snag a first-round home playoff game.
The boys in Old Glory Red are still in contention for the fourth and final playoff-hosting spot following Saturday’s result. The victory lifted SRFC up to fourth place in the Western Conference with 48 points from 32 matches and officially solidified Sacramento a spot in the postseason. Despite currently possessing a place in the top four, the Indomitable Club does not have full control over their playoff-hosting destiny.
Hot on Republic FC’s tail is Orange County SC in fifth place with 48 points from 31 games. Sacramento still has one final home match against Orange County on Saturday, October 12 then travel to Real Monarchs on Saturday, October 19 for Republic FC’s regular season finale. Monarchs currently occupies sixth place with 46 points from 30 games and plays Orange County this Wednesday. If OCSC and Monarchs draw midweek and the boys in Old Glory Red win their final two matches, Sacramento is almost a lock for a home playoff game.
Republic FC would still need some results from two Texan clubs to go in their favor as well. Both El Paso Locomotive FC (8th, 46 pts, 31 games played) and Austin Bold FC (7th, 46 pts, 31 games played) have the potential to leapfrog SRFC and grab fourth place if they can manage to win a few more matches. The two teams from the Lone Star State go head-to-head Wednesday night and if the match ends in a draw, Republic FC can finish in fourth if they win out.
Next up for playoff-bound Republic FC is an international friendly on Wednesday, October 9 at Papa Murphy’s Park against FC Juarez of Mexico’s top flight, Liga MX. Following the friendly, the boys in Old Glory Red return to league play on Saturday, October 12 when Orange County visits Sacramento for the final regular season home game of the year.

TULSA, Okla. It was all Republic FC to start the match and the visitors would find their breakthrough by way of a Villyan Bijev strike in the 13th minute. The Bulgarian-born winger punished the Roughnecks from close range after Tulsa defender Cyprian Hedrick misjudged a Dekel Keinan longball that Bijev chested down and cooly slotted past goalkeeper Sean Lewis.
The Indomitable Club took a 2-0 lead when winger Sam Werner picked out midfielder Drew Skundrich who drove his first touch across the top of the box. Iwasa’s well-played dummy run allowed Enevoldsen to slam a right-footed effort into the back of the net and double SRFC’s lead.
The hosts cut Republic FC’s lead in half off of a set piece when Rodrigo da Costa set up a Marlon header in the 31st minute. Tulsa tied the match in the 40th minute when da Costa dished out his team-leading 13th assist of the season to Janu Silva.
