Sacramento Republic FC Defender Emrah Klimenta and Forward Trevin Caesar Earn National Team Call-ups for World Cup Qualifying Matches

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 29, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC defender Emrah Klimenta and forward Trevin Caesar have been called up to the Montenegro National Team and Trinidad and Tobago National Team, respectively. Both players joined their respective national teams this week and will remain through Sept. 5, missing Republic FC’s match against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Sept. 2.

“It is very exciting news for both players and it is a reflection of the form that they have been in,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “Their national teams have been monitoring their performance and it has been at high levels. We are proud to have two internationals players representing their countries and our club on a global stage.”

This is the third time that Klimenta has been called up to the Montenegro National Team. The defender previously joined the National Team from May 20 – 29, 2016 for a friendly match against Turkey and earlier this season from May 24 – Jun. 10 for a World Cup Qualifying Match against Armenia.

Klimenta and the Montenegro National Team entered camp on Aug. 27 and will play in World Cup Qualifying Matches against Kazakhstan on Sept. 1 and Romania on Sept. 4. Klimenta will rejoin Republic FC on Sept. 5.

This marks Caesar’s first call up to Trinidad and Tobago as a member of Republic FC. The forward will join the national team for their World Cup Qualifying Matches against Honduras on Sept. 1 and Panama on Sept. 5. Caesar will rejoin Republic FC on Sept. 6.

Klimenta and Caesar join Jeremy Hall as Republic FC players who have received National Team call-ups while playing with Republic FC. Several Republic FC Academy players have also received call-ups to youth national teams.

Republic FC will face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park. The match will be broadcast on CW31 and streamed live at www.sacrepublicfc.com/matchday-guide and the USL Match Center. Tickets are available at www.sacrepublicfc.com.

Republic FC Academy Kicks Off Third Season in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy

August marks the return to school for many schools across the Sacramento region. For Republic FC’s Academy it also means back to the pitch for the 120 players who make up the club’s youth academy.

The 2017-2018 season will feature six age divisions, starting at the U-12 level all the way through U-18/19s, across U.S. Soccer Development Academy programs. This season will see the addition of a new age group – the U-15 division. The rest of the age groups thus will be split differently, with the older groups now split into U-16/17 and U-18/19 categories, instead of U-15/16 and U-17/18 age divisions like in previous years.

The Republic FC Academy enters their third season off of a remarkable performance in the 2016-2017 season. Both the U-15/16s and the U-17/18s clinched a place in the playoffs, and both reached the group stage. Additionally, for the second year in a row, Republic FC’s Academy was honored with multiple USSDA End Of Year Awards highlighted by two coaches and three players receiving awards.

2016-2017 Academy U-14 Head Coach Mikey Varas and current U-15/16 Head Coach Simon Elliot were both recognized as Coaches of the Year in their respective age categories. Varas’ U-14s put in an impressive performance at the USSDA Summer Showcase with a 4-0 win over Oakwood Soccer Club. Throughout the season, the U-14s put in several dominant performances, including a 13-0 win in the beginning of the season. The U-14 age category and below in the USSDA do not record standings or have playoffs.

For his part, Elliot took the U-15/16s to the group stages of the USSDA playoffs for the second year in a row. Although the U-15/16s did not advance to the Quarterfinals, the team had a solid season. Elliot and the U-15/16s earned a record of 18-10-4 during the USSDA regular season and finished in fourth place on the West U-15/16 Northwest Division standings. The U-15/16s also had the second-highest goals scored in the Northwest Division with 53, second only to standings leaders Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-15/16s.

Defender Travian Sousa was named to the U-15/16 Western Conference Best XI. Sousa made 22 (18 starts) appearances during the USSDA regular season and played in all three of Republic FC U-15/16s’ group stage playoff matches, starting two of those. Sousa has previously been called up to the U.S. Soccer Boys National Team.

For the U-17/18s, midfielder Giovanni Aguilar and forward Francis Avoce were both named to the Western Conference Best XI in their age group. Aguilar started in 24 of his 27 appearances, recording one goal during the regular season. He started all three matches in the group stage of the SRFC U-17/18s playoff matches.

Avoce led the Republic FC U-17/18s in goals scored with 18, earning himself a spot in the Western Conference Top 10 Goal Scorers leaderboard. Avoce also clinched a spot on the Goals Per Game Played leaderboard. The 19-year-old defender made 28 appearances, starting in 23 of those matches.

Both Aguilar and Avoce will be going on to join NCAA Division I soccer programs this fall, along with eight of their Republic FC U-17/18 teammates. Aguilar will head to California State University, Northridge, while Avoce will play at Loyola Marymount University. They all become the second class of Academy players heading to play collegiate soccer, after seven players from the 2015-2016 season went on to play DI soccer at universities across the state.

Along with those players going on to play collegiately, there are two Academy products already plying their trade in the professional ranks of the sport. Sixteen-year-old midfielder Roberto Hategan, who signed with Republic FC’s first team last month, made his professional debut on Saturday, Jul. 15 against Liga MX club CF Pachuca in an international friendly. Hategan played the entire first half.

“It was amazing and it was an awesome crowd,” said Hategan. “I love the atmosphere. I wish I could have got a goal in but otherwise it was good. I thank Coach [Buckle] for putting me in, and I thank the Lord for giving me this chance.”

“Hategan was excellent [in his debut] and he’s barely 16 years old,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “We started him on the right even though he’s more comfortable on the left. Once I moved him into the space as a number 10 he looked outstanding. He was excellent receiving the ball and making smart plays. I think anyone with a football brain could see why I’ve given him a contract at his age. I saw those attributes early.”

The Roseville native is the first-ever SRFC Academy player to sign with the Republic FC First Team, but he is not the first Academy product to sign a professional contract. Midfielder Ryley Kraft, who played with the Academy from 2015 through part of the 2016-2017 season, signed with Orlando City B in March of this year.

With his step into the first team, Hategan doesn’t forget the foundation laid down by the two years spent in the Republic FC Academy. Instead, he heralds all the support and guidance, on and off the pitch, that he received from coaches and players in the Academy.

“It was a great and crucial step in my career. The Academy helped me better every single detail of the game, from the touch, to the pass, to the correct foot to use,” said Hategan. “It’s a first-class program and it shows in the awards the program has earned. Simon [Elliot] fully deserves getting U-15/16 Coach of the Year. He’s an amazing coach. And the players, Francis, Gio and Travian all really earned their spots on the conference teams.”

Hategan joined the Republic FC Academy in its inaugural season in 2015-2016, scoring 20 goals in two seasons with the program. Prior to joining the Academy, Hategan played with local youth club San Juan Soccer Club. In addition, the midfielder was called up in April 2016 to the U.S. National Team U-16 Boys’ Team. Hategan appeared in two matches with the U.S. BNT, including an appearance in the Delle Nazioni Tournament against England.

For Buckle, signing Hategan is a great sign that the Academy is heading in the right direction in just it’s third year. Buckle has worked closely with the Academy coaches to ensure that the young players are held to the same standard as the First Team and seeing some of the players already developing into first team talents is priceless for not only Buckle but the club as well.

“It’s been a great year. Any time you get a young player through to the professional ranks is a success," said Buckle. "It’s not about results at the Academy level, on the field although winning is a huge part of development of a player but the real result is getting players into the first team and into the squad and we’ve done that this season. We’ve set the bar high and we’ve got to continue it. I’m looking forward to working with the coaches and all of the players again for this new season."

Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, Phoenix Rising FC 3

The match started quickly for Phoenix Rising FC, getting their first shot just 30 seconds into the match. On the opening kickoff, Jason Johnson took the ball down the left side before sending it back across to the middle of the box. Midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips swung and missed on his shot attempt, but Alessandro Riggi, who was following the play, collected the ball taking a touch to his right before unleashing a rocket on goal that went right over the crossbar.

Phoenix would score soon after however, in the 10th minute. Wright-Phillips had a corner on the left side, sending a driven ball toward the front post. Forward Chris Cortez ran in front of the Republic FC defense and flicked the ball toward the back post. Cortez’ header beat Republic FC keeper Evan Newton, hit the post and fell into the back of the net putting Phoenix ahead 1-0.

Republic FC soon recovered, dominating a massive 65 percent of the possession in the first half. Their best look at goal came in the 32nd minute. After a few blocked attempts on goal, Emrah Klimenta collected the ball on the right side near the top of the box. The defender took a touch before ripping a right-footed strike on goal that beat the keeper, but rolled just left of the goal, keeping the score 1-0 going into the half.

The second half of the match saw a flurry of goals from both clubs. In the 48th minute, Johnson again led a Phoenix attack, this time down the middle of the pitch. Johnson took the ball near the top of the box before sending it out wide left for Cortez who was running alongside. Cortez took a touch before sending it back to Johnson, whose one-touch left-footed shot tucked just inside the goal, putting Phoenix ahead 2-0.

Republic FC responded quickly however. Defender James Kiffe had the ball wide right before crossing the ball into the box. Substitute forward Matt Wiesenfarth chested the ball to his feet before sending it back to Agustin Cazarez. The midfielder took a strong left-footed shot from the top of the box, which was blocked by a diving Carl Woszczynski. The Phoenix keeper saved the shot, but was unable to collect the ball as it rolled just out of his reach. Substitute forward Trevin Caesar followed the play perfectly and tapped home the rebound for his club-leading seventh goal of the season, pulling Republic FC within a goal of Pheonix.

Phoenix would score a quick response however, scoring in the 52nd minute. Wright-Phillips took a corner from the right side that threatened, but Newton was quick off his line, punching the ball away. Newton’s punch went only as far as Cortez, however, who immediately sent a chipped cross back into the box after seeing that Newton was yet to recover from the punch. Peter Ramage skied high over the defense and headed the cross into the open goal for the 3-1 lead.

Republic FC would work hard again to find another response with their best look on goal coming in the 78th minute. Defender Chris Christian took a free kick from about 35 yards from goal, sending a short pass to Cazarez who had found open space. Cazarez then sent the ball into the box and to the feet of Caesar who rounded his man, who had gone to the ground, before striking a right-footed shot on goal, but the shot was just wide hitting the outside of the side netting.

“We have been pretty water tight on set plays since I got here, but tonight we were not and we paid the price,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “It was unlike us, I can’t remember the last time we conceded three goals.”

Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 2, Swope Park Rangers 2

Swope Park Rangers came out quickly, jumping on the score sheet in just the 4th minute. After a turnover in the midfield the Rangers forward Hassan Saad received a pass from midfielder Christian Duke. Saad rolled over the ball with his right foot to get past the initial defender before blasting a right-footed shot from just outside the box that went past Evan Newton for the opening goal.

Republic FC answered in the 36th minute after Trevin Caesar earned a free kick from 20 yards out. Emrah Klimenta took the free kick, sending the ball up and over the wall before it struck the crossbar and bounced straight down on the goal line. Wilson Kneeshaw followed the rebound perfectly and smashed home the equalizer into the open net, making it 1-1 which it would stay until halftime.

The Rangers would jump back ahead in the 68th minute on a throw in to the chest of Duke who was inside the box. The Rangers’ captain controlled the ball and quickly turned to cross the ball. Forward Kharlton Belmar stepped in front of the defense to redirect the cross past Newton and into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Republic FC began a flurry of attacks in the last 20 minutes as they tried to rescue the point for a draw. Forward Tyler Blackwood was able to do just that in the 88th minute as he unleashed a wicked side volley to level the match at 2-2. Defender Elliott Hord attacked the right side of the defense before finding Blackwood in the box with a cross. Blackwood rocketed the volley past a diving Rangers’ keeper Adrián Zendejas for the equalizer.

“We were up against it; in a match against a top team,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “Our subs came in and did very well. [Blackwood’s goal] was huge and that is why Tyler is out there. All in all, I am very happy with the point.”

Republic FC have a quick turnaround in USL play this week as they host Swope Park Rangers on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Kickoff is 8 p.m. This is the last 8 p.m. home kickoff for Republic FC as the kickoff time will return to 7:30 p.m. starting in September.

Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, Reno 1868 FC 2

Sacramento Republic FC jumped out to an early lead in the 15th minute. Defender James Kiffe received the ball wide on the left wing before sending a looping cross into the box. Midfielder Hayden Partain made a near-post run and sent a glancing header past Reno 1868 FC keeper Matt Bersano and into the back of the net. The goal marked Partain’s first as a professional and put Republic FC ahead 1-0.

Reno would respond quickly however, with a strike from the USL’s leading goal scorer Dane Kelly. The forward found space in the center of the box and defender Nick Von Niederhäusern found him with a cross. Kelly elevated and sent a powerful header past a diving Republic FC keeper Evan Newton for the emphatic equalizer.

After Kiffe barely chased down and cleared a would-be goal off the line, Reno would use the shift in momentum to jump ahead in the 22nd minute. Defender Elliott Hord was shown a yellow card for a tackle just outside of the box and Reno capitalized. Midfielder Chris Wehan curled his free-kick up and over the six-man wall as it dipped under the bottom of the crossbar and past a Newton to put Reno ahead 2-1.

The match continued back and forth throughout the rest of the half. Newton and Reno keeper Matt Bersano were both called to action to make saves in 1-one-1 situations in the first half. Newton was forced to make a save when Kelly was able to beat the defense and get a clear path to goal. Kelly rifled a shot from 20 yards out and Newton leapt in the air, blocking the shot with a strong two-handed parry. Bersano made a crucial save on a breakaway chance for Trevin Caesar. The speedy Republic FC forward picked off a pass and took off for goal before attempting to chip the keeper. Bersano went to ground and blocked the attempt away with one hand only to have Wilson Kneeshaw follow the rebound and send a strike on goal. Bersano recovered in time to make the follow up save and maintain the 2-1 lead for Reno going into halftime.

The second half did not see as much action as the first but Republic FC did put the pressure on to find an equalizer late. After an onslaught of crosses into the box, Republic FC earned a corner kick in stoppage time. Kiffe sent the ball into the box and Newton, who had left his box to help in the attack, leapt in the air and actually won the header as he redirected it towards the near post. The Reno defense had both posts covered and cleared the ball away just as the final whistle blew.

Sacramento Republic FC Sign Quincy Butler

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 18, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC have added forward Quincy Butler to the club’s USL roster under an Academy Player on a Professional Team contract. The 15-year-old Butler will be available for selection in USL matches, but will not lose his amateur status.

“Quincy impressed me when I watched the academy play,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “He currently is involved with the first team, though the emphasis will be about training and gaining experience. We have high hopes for him.”

Butler becomes the first Republic FC Academy player to join the club’s USL roster on an academy/USL contract, a unique form of USL contract designed to preserve the player’s amateur status. Butler has been with Republic FC’s United States Developmental Academy since its inception in 2015, playing with the U-13/14 team in the first season and the U-15/16 team last season. Butler currently is a member of Republic FC’s U-17 Academy team. He has scored 26 goals in 64 career academy appearances. Butler played with San Juan Soccer Club prior to joining Republic FC’s Academy.

Republic FC returns home on Saturday, Aug. 19 when they host their rivals Reno 1868 FC. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park. Tickets are available at www.sacrepublicfc.com.

Sacramento Republic FC Release Midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 18, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC have released Daniel Trickett-Smith by mutual consent of the club and the player. Trickett-Smith made 29 appearances for Republic FC over two seasons, scoring four goals and adding an assist.

Republic FC to Host Backpack Drive This Saturday at Republic FC vs Reno 1868 FC

Sacramento Republic FC are teaming up with Volunteers of America for the fourth year in a row to collect backpack and school supply donations for homeless and at-risk youth throughout the Sacramento region.

The Backpack Drive will be held this Saturday, Aug. 19 with the help of the Volunteers of America at Papa Murphy's Park prior to Republic FC vs Reno 1868 FC. The match is Back to School Night, presented by Papa Murphy's Pizza.

Fans are encouraged to bring backpacks for donation as well as school supplies to this Saturday's match. Donation bins will be located at the gates of Papa Murphy's Park and there will be volunteers helping fans drop off their donations.

The donations will benefit children from pre-K to 12th grade. Fans are encouraged to buy a backpack and fill it with items found on the Operation Backpack school supply lists found below. Sample items include pencils, three-ring binders, crayons, etc. Fans who wish to receive a receipt of their donation may fill out the supply list and place it inside of the backpack(s) they donate.
