2016 SEASON RECAP
Led by former Premier League player Barry Venison , the Blues had a roller coaster season, ending the regular season with a record of 12-14-4. The season started off rocky for the Blues, going winless in their first three matches. The club’s first win of the season came on Apr. 16 in a 1-0 win against San Antonio FC. The Blues went on to win their next two matches, including a 1-0 win at Bonney Field on Apr. 30. However, Orange County then went on another four match winless streak, racking up two losses and two ties.
The Blues were hot and cold for the rest of the season, racking up seven wins from Jun. 4 through Aug. 20, but also suffering seven defeats in that same time period. Republic FC handed the Blues a 1-0 defeat on Aug. 24, and then another defeat on Sept. 3.
In their last match of the season, the Blues needed to not only win but win with a goal differential greater than Portland Timbers 2, who were also fighting for the final playoff spot. The Blues went up early against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC when in the 14th minute Crettenand stepped up for a free kick and slotted it perfectly in the upper right hand corner of goal. With Portland up 3-2 over Arizona near the end of regulation time and the Blues needing two more goals to steal the last playoff spot, Caesar put the Blues up 3-0 in a matter of just three minutes. Forward Orr Barouch added a fourth goal to give the Blues a 4-0 defeat and a pass to the 2016 USL playoffs.
Orange County finished tied for the fewest draws of the season in the West, recording just four and did not register a draw in their final 13 matches. Additionally, the Blues are the only playoff team in the West to enter the postseason with a negative goal differential with -2.
